The Story of Us

Twenty

Sky and I chewed on some popcorn as we fell into the T.V. watching Toy Story Three.

Every so often Sky would eye me suspiciously as I grew a silly grin on my face after receiving a text from Nick.

As the movie hit the credits, Sky and I dabbed our eyes with tissues. The ending got me every time. My phone buzzed in my hand and I quickly shot Nick a reply. As I locked my phone, I could feel Sky looking over my shoulder.

“Who’s Nick?” Sky asked sitting across from me.

“I meet him at the beginning of summer. He’s really cute and such a sweetheart.” I couldn’t help but gush about him.

“Got a picture?” Sky questioned. I flipped through my phone, pulling up a picture I took of him last week. Sky grabbed my phone and let out a whistle. “He is one fine piece of boy!” She murmured.

“He was who I meet up with yesterday. And guess what? He asked me out and were going on a date tomorrow night!” I exclaimed. Sky let out a little squeal and clapped her hands together. “I’m so happy for you! Ask if he has a twin brother!”

We continued to gush about Nick for five minutes straight.

Caleb sauntered into the room in his boxers, pushing our conversation out the window. He seemed to be for muscular then before. He also looked paler, as if he hadn’t been outside since last winter. I forced my head away from his general direction, trying to force myself not to gawk at him. I couldn’t help but glance to see Caleb lean against the wall, crossing his arms over his extremely toned chest.

“So you have a boyfriend?” Caleb asked, staring at me. I shifted my weight wishing he would break his gaze. “Um yeah.” I replied, practically whispered.

“Oh I see.” Caleb sneered. He shoulders slumped. “I hope you two live happily ever after.” He added before stalking out of the room.

After he was out of hearing range, Sky let out a little sigh. “Don’t take it personally; he’s been acting like that all summer. All he does is sulk around the house, go to the gym, or smoke with his skeeve of a friend Austin.” Sky frowned shaking her head. “Oh.” Was all I could manage to let out.

“I wish I just knew why he’s so miserable so I could cheer him up.” Sky let out another long sigh. I felt a lump form in my throat. It was now or never.

“Um Sky?” I said. She looked up at me. “At the party, me and Caleb…we sort of kissed…I woke up next to him and sort of freaked out. Then he found me later and I told him that it meant nothing…”

I could see Sky’s face run with a thousand different emotions, but the one it settled on was anger.

“Wait are you trying to tell me you’re the reason my brother in some kind of funk?!” Sky seethed. “I…I don’t know…possibly?” I replied bowing my head.

“You’ve practically be in love with him since the 6th grade, and when he finally feels the same way you reject him!?” Sky’s voice was raising high with anger. She shook her head at me, stood up, and stormed out of the room.

“Sky wait, I’m sorry!”  I yelled. She turned back to look at me. “I need to go talk to my brother. Have a nice rest of the summer.” She snarled.

“Wait are we just not friends anymore?!” I cried.

“I just can’t be around you right now.” Sky shrugged her shoulder, and stormed off leaving me alone.

Now my stupid self had lost the both of them.
