Chapter Five

The first transformation was horrendously painful. I could feel my bones pop, break, and crack. I felt them dislocate and bend. I wanted to scream, and in all reality, I probably did.

Once I shifted, I remembered feeling free. It was like a different part of me was controlling me, a sort of weird primal part of me. I could feel what my wolf was feeling, I was her and she was me, but yet we were as different as day and night.

It was like everything in me was at peace. I loved the feeling of being free. I had waited my entire life for this feeling of empowerment. I felt powerful, stronger than I was in my human form. I ran and ran and ran. I loved it.

Shifting back was the easy, painless part. Every shift after the first was supposedly easier, and they also were controllable, versus the shock in the night that this was.

I snuck back into my house, stark naked. While I admired the whole wolf experience, destroying my clothes wasn’t the best. I took a shower, getting the mud, dirt, and sweat out of my hair. I slipped on some clothes and got ready for the day. I hadn’t slept at all, but I wasn’t really tired. It was already seven am.

I slipped on a cute sleeveless button up with a Peter Pan collar and high waist shorts and did my makeup. I did my hair, and walked down the stairs. Reese was sitting at the counter, eating cereal in nothing but his boxers.

“Hey sis, have fun last night?” he smirked.

“I did, actually. It hurt like hell, but oh well,” I smiled. I stole the box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch from him and poured myself a bowl. I sat beside him. This was our kind of normal. As much as I hated his whoring ways, and as much as we fought, he was still my brother. We usually had breakfast together, or a late night snack. It was never planned, just a mere coincidence where our schedules actually met up.

“Congrats, Amity!” my mother said. She was leaving for work. She and dad worked a lot. My mom was a pediatrician and my dad was a lawyer. They weren’t home often.

“Thanks,” I said, feeling like it was kind of awkward to congratulate me on something that was inevitable. It was like someone coming up to you when you get your first period and gush on about how you’re a young lady now.

Reese put his bowl in the sink and left the house without another word. That was usually how he worked. It didn’t really matter where he went. We’d catch up again later today probably.

I texted Elsey and Kat, telling them about my first transformation. Elsey’s mate was the guy from the party, his name was really Seth. They were cuter than Corey and Topanga from Boy Meets World. They were literally made for each other. Kat, however, still hadn’t found her mate, and she was a little sour because of it.

I couldn’t help but wonder who my mate was. I could find him now that I’d gone through the transformation. I wondered if he was older than me, or if I would have to wait for him to go through the transformation, too.

Neither Reese nor Archer had found their mates. They went through the transformation about two years ago. Sometimes I wondered if they slept around in hopes of finding their girl, but sometimes I didn’t know how to take the dynamic duo.
