CHAPTER 1: New Routes

Samantha's pov:

"YES! YES!" I screamed jumping on my older brother William. He twirled me around twice before finally dropping me.

"why the extra shurrg of happiness?" he asked when I couldn't quit smiling.

"I made it Liam, the exam for empire high school. I was chosen, and due to my scores, the school has granted me full scholarship" I said and Liam pulled me into another hug.

"that's great,  I knew you would" he said.

"am going to graduate from high school,  and get a job so I can help daddy.  I'll make sure that you are proud of me,  liam"

"you'll never know how proud of you I already am" he said pecking my forehead.

"I love you liam"

"I love you more. Hey,  wanna tell dad the news? " he asked and my eyes lit up in excitement.

" yes yes,  you think they'll let us in" I asked.

"we have been going everyday for ten years,  they must have grown accustomed to us by now.  Come on." he said taking  my hand and pulling me out the door.

We got to the hospital only to be stopped by the doctor on duty.  All the doctors here already knew us by name.

"why do you two think you're going" she asked.

"we want to see daddy" I said wishing she'd just let us through.

"am sorry Sam,  but it's already way past visiting hours" he said and I looked up at Liam,  hoping he could change her mind.

"we got caught up in traffic,  we're sorry" he lied and I seriously hoped she believes him.

"I really can't"

"come on Sarah,  just this once" he pleaded.

"I don't know... "

" just one hour. One hour and we'll leave" he said and she sighed before letting us in. I jumped on the bed beside daddy and Liam sat at the other side of the bed.

"hey dad,  we have good news" Liam said and I starting talking.

"yeah,  I got accepted into empire high school on scholarship and I resume in a week. I know you have always wanted me to go there,  and I finally made it in. everything has been settled by the school,  well except my uniforms"

"uniforms?, why didn't you tell me." Liam asked.

"I was going to. Anyway, I have to get the winter wear,  sports wear, trench coat, and the uniform for regular days". I replied and he sighed.

"and just how much are we talking about here " he asked and I hesitated before answering.

"about ten thousand dollars" I said and he head shot up.

" ten what? Sam how am I going to raise ten thousand dollars within the span of eight days"

"we don't have to get if you can't afford it" I said and he ran a hand through his hair.

"I'll... I'll.. See what I can do... I'll sell my laptop and-"

"no Liam,  you can't keep selling your stuff,  just so that you can meet my needs. We can just buy the regular uniform for now,  and maybe get the rest later." I said and he shook his head.

"this is important. I can't let you attend empire high for the first time dressed differently from the rest of them. He paused, and I guessed he was thinking again. "I'll empty my account and see a few friends, collect a loan from my work place if necessary." he said and I nodded,  afraid to speak so I don't end up crying.  The door opened and the doctor walked in.

"we're sorry,  we didn't know one hour had passed,  we'll leave now" Liam said but she shook her head.

"that's not why am here,  I want to speak to you in my office" she said and Liam got up.

"wanna come?" he asked.

"you go,  I'll keep  daddy company" I said and he nodded before stepping out of the room.

William's pov:

I entered the doctor's office and shut the door.

"seat down." she said gesturing to the chair in front of her. I took my seat and looked at small statues on her wooden desk.

"you know why I called you here,  don't you?" she asked and I nodded.

"am sorry,  I didn't mean to take this long before paying,  it just that right now things are really bad. I don't have anyone, and my younger sister needs to go to school and am all she has for now . I get the money no matter what,  I promise, I'll take on another job, just please be patient with me and keep treating him.  With interest,  I'll pay it all back." I pled,  but she just look at me apologetically.

"two months William,  two months is all I can give you,  after that,  you have to pay up".

"thank you Sarah, I won't forget this,  thank you " I said and left her office. I shut the door behind me and sat on the floor. I blinked a few times,  trying to withhold the tears that were threatening to spill. I can cry,  I have to be strong for both Sam and I. I felt someone tap me.  I looked up and saw Sam staring down at me with questioning eyes.

"what did she say" she asked

" not much,  she just talked to me about dad's health." I said.  I wasn't about to tell her about the bills yet,  she needed money for her uniform,  I Still have two month before dad's treatment fees are due, but I had eight days to come up with ten thousand dollars for her. She crouched down beside me and wrapped her hands around me.

"we'll get through this" she choked and I pulled back to look at her.

"Sam,  don't cry,  please don't cry. We have to be strong for daddy's" I said rubbing her back.

"I  can't help it... We used to be so happy. With mom and dad until... Until-"

"stop,  please stop crying Sam, things will be the same way they used to be,  I can promise you that". I said and she sobbed for about twenty minutes before finally falling asleep. We got home and I went to my dad's study. I sat on his chair and thought of ways to raise more money. I have to strive,  for Samantha's sake,  I just have to.
