As Matt, the friend who had helped me with my assignment, had left later that evening, I was sitting on my bed, still thinking about the rather unusual way I'd made friends with Patrick earlier on and hoping for a text of him that showed he didn't only ask for my number out of obliged friendliness.
That's clearly not good, you think way too much about this guy, Hannah! And after all, you were talking to him for less than 15 minutes. You can't fall in love that fast! I was scolding myself as my phone on the nightstand vibrated.
Unknown number: Hey, it's me, Patrick. I just wanted to make sure that you didn't give me some random number just to get rid of me :)
Well, that was kind of cute. I was thinking about what to answer on that one, and as I got an idea I hastily tipped the message and pressed 'send'.
Me: Come on, first our sudden engagement, and then after less than a day I don't want to see you anymore? I wouldn't dump you this fast :)Patrick: Well, then I feel relieved :)
Anyway, I promised you something. Are you free some time this week? Cause normally I plan on keeping my promises :)I had to ponder briefly if there were any important appointments for the coming days and concluded that I was, except for my classes in the morning, free.
Me: I'm fairly flexible, what about you? What do you think of tomorrow afternoon?
I was secretly hoping that he didn't have any plans tomorrow, because I could hardly await meeting Patrick again. He just had something on him that made my mood improve, barely 5 minutes with him earlier in the afternoon were enough to make me smile.
Get a grip on yourself, Hannah! You barely know him, there's no room for you to say something about his personality. You're way too emotional, I hope you remember where this led the last time. Humen beings are vicious creatures, it's in their nature to hurt others, you can't help it. If you place your trust in someone too early on, they'll only take it and shatter it into pieces like a heart of glass and leave you alone with all the shards. Sad but true, and you've already learned your lesson...
It won't be different with this guy, sooner or later he will leave you too, with a broken heard and shards beneath your feet. Humans are selfish, if you need a friend the most, he won't be there, because he's too busy minding his own business. And sadly you can't change it, that's the way things are. Firstly, take your time to get to know Patrick better before you jump to conclusions or, even worse, fall head over heels for him. You'll see, a bit rationality will spare you needless pain!Maybe my inner voice was right with that one, but I just wanted to enjoy the warm feeling I got whenever Patrick was around and not worry about possible obstacles that could occur in a future friendship with him. I usually was a very emotional person and got hurt quite badly a few times, so I was rather cautious about making new acquaintances. But I couldn't help myself, with Patrick it was almost like a magnet dragged me towards him.
I decided not to worry any more and just go slow, when I saw my phone blink. One new message.
Patrick: Yeah, tomorrow sounds great. I've got a meeting until 3, but afterwards I'm free :) What about you meet me directly at the studio and then we decide together where to go?
Studio? Well, I wouldn't have taken him for a fitness guru. Such a brawny, testosterone-loaded macho was the exact opposite of Patrick, who was too polite to rebuff even the worst bitch. And he didn't look like a dancer either. Well, you can ask him yourself tomorrow. I hastily typed an answer.
Me: That's alright :) I just don't own a car, so we either have to take the subway or walk...
Patrick: No problem, the studio's in the city center anyways, it takes 5 minutes at the most to get to the pedestrian area. Then until tomorrow at 3, I'm gonna send you the address in a few.
Me: See you then, thanks :)
I put my phone aside and went in the kitchen to make a tea, the anticipation apparently clearly shown in my face, because my roommate and friend Vivian instantly recognized the smile on my lips.
"Tell me, what's the reason you're so cheerful today? Have you finally got a date after all this time?", she asked mockingly.
"Just because I, unlike you, do not change my boyfriend more often than I show up for classes, doesn't mean that my love life is nonexistent!", I replied, but knew all too well that this wouldn't affect my friend. Truth was, even though she as good as never appeared at university her grades were better than most of the students' achievements who attended classes regularly. Vivian instead preferred to spend her time in one of the many coffee-shops around town flirting with the baristas.
But if you needed a friend you could be sure that she dumped whatever barista she was seducing just now to be by your side, no matter how attractive or nice the guy was. This was one of the reasons she became -despite our completely different personalities- my best friend over the years, I really couldn't be more glad to have a friend like her.
But today I had an idea on how to pay her back for all the teasing I had to endure since we've moved in together."And no, it's not a date. Actually, I'm engageged. But you were too busy with your baristas to notice any of it", I said, barely able to hide a smirk. As I saw her dumbfounded face I couldn't refrain myself from laughing any longer. I grabbed my teacup that had infused by now, placed it on the kitchen table and sat beside my friend to tell her about my strange encounter earlier in the afternoon.
As I came to tell her about the part with the biker, she was shaking with laughter and almost laying beneath the table.
"Well, I clearly wouldn't have trusted you to do such a crazy thing. I think not even I would have dared to act the way you did, and you know best of all how crazy I can get."
That was in fact true and not exaggerated at all. Last year on christmas for example was a winter-wonderland for children at the mall, where they could take pictures with Santa Clause and stuff. Vivian, however, thought Santa was one of her baristas and stood between all the children in line to get a photo with him. I, by all means, couldn't hold her back from doing so, no matter how hard I tried to convince her to come with me to Barnes & Nobles.
When it was finally Vivians turn to get her photo taken, she sat on Santas lap and, just as the flash lit, kissed him on the cheek. Only problem was, unfortunately Santa turned out not to be a barista, but some chubby man in his mid-forties. I had to smirk at this memory, but Vivian interrupted my thoughts."So, do you have a crush on this Patrick?", she asked me, and I answered honestly that I didn't even fully know that myself. I was just so insecure about my emotions, but Patrick was probably not interested in me anyways. After that we basically spent our whole evening analyzing Patricks words and gestures, and Vivian came to the conclusion that he maybe could like me a bit more than just in a friendly way, but I didn't want to believe her, after all I've only known him for less than a day.
When I paid attention to my surroundings again, I realized that it was already dark outside and my tea had long cooled off. I said goodnight to Vivian and quickly showered before I went to bed. A brief glance at my phone told me that I had a new message, and I curiously unlocked the screen, only to see it was from Patrick, with the address and a cute greeting.
Patrick: I'm really looking forward to meeting you tomorrow, good night :)
With a smile on my face I pulled the covers over my body, and as sleep finally took over I was welcomed by weird dreams of engagement rings, wedding dresses and tramp-stamp tattoos...
