I walked out into the library with my coffee and saw Sam pushing books into his backpack.
"We have a case. We're leaving soon." He informed me.
"Wow, so soon? We were just at our last case a week ago." I responded. We had to take care of a simple spirit in our last place. It wasn't anything that big. Usually we only got cases every 2 months if we were lucky. Our case when we saw my family was over a month ago.
"Yep. We aren't sure what it is yet." He said and walked into the kitchen, filling a thermos up before Dean walked out and filled one up to.
"Morning sweetheart, ready for the case?" He asked as he handed me the coffee.
"I guess so. How long will we be gone?" I asked him. He shrugged. I packed enough stuff for a week and put it in the impala. Before noon, we were in the car driving toward Missouri. Sam fell asleep in the back, like usual, so Dean and I were talking.
"Hey, don't you usually have a ring on?" He asked, picking up my left hand and rubbing the empty spot on my ring finger.
"I gave it to Ruby because it was anti-possession. Its driving me crazy not having it." I explained.
"Here." He took a ring off of his finger and handed it to me. "Put that on." I slid the silver band on and looked at it. It fit perfectly, surprisingly enough, and was the right size to fill the gap.
"Thanks." I said and put my hand back on the seat. We continued talking until Sam woke up. We found a hotel in the town we were hunting in and took all of our stuff in. Its already too late to do any research.
"I saw a diner down the road. Dinner?" I asked Dean. He seemed really tired but his face lit up a little when I mentioned diner food.
"As long as they have pie." He responded and we went to find it. It wasn't hard to spot. As soon as we went in, we got a few weird looks from the other people there. We were kind of out of place in a place like this. Its a small town and every ones probably on edge about the recent disappearances that we're here about. A thin redheaded waitress came and gave us a booth to sit in. I made sure to sit next to Dean.
"Anything I can get you to drink?" She asked. Dean and I went with coffee while Sam just got water. She went to get it for us and waited for us to order. When she walked away, I had Dean pass me the sugar and creamer and we loaded our coffee the way we liked it. 5 sugars and 2 creamers.
"You need carmel sauce?" He teased me as he passed me a spoon to stir my coffee.
"Mm. Maybe. Its pretty good with carmel." I giggled.
"Ready to order?" Our waitress came back. I glanced at the menu and just randomly picked something.
"I'll have the double stack pancakes with eggs, please." I said and took a sip of my coffee.
"Same here, and some pie." Dean said next to me. Sam got some kind of sandwich and Dean and I kept messing around. After we ate Dean got his pie. He stuffed his face with it, his cheeks were puffed out like a chipmunk.
"You look like a squirrel." I started laughing. He just shoved another bite in his mouth.
"I don't know what you're talking about." He mumbled through his food, putting some whip cream on his fork and wiping it on my cheek.
"Dean!" I kept laughing as I wiped it off.
"Oh, you got a little something there." He told me and put more whip cream on my face. I couldn't help but laugh about it. His pie was gone by the time he was finished putting whip cream on my face.
"Great, where's all the napkins?" I asked, looking for one. I guess we used them all.
"Come here." Dean said and pulled me close to him, licking my face.
"Gross! Dude!" I moved away from him and tried to wipe his spit on my jacket sleeve, smiling the whole time.
"Come on, let's go get some sleep." He said as he stood up, tossing enough money to cover the bill and a tip on the table before grabbing my hand and walking out. I rubbed my face against his jacket.
"What are you doing?" He chuckled.
"Trying to get your spit off of me." I giggled back. He just bent down and licked my face again. I dropped his hand. "You are so disgusting." I smiled and hit at him playfully. We were acting like little kids, I'll admit that, but it was fucking funny.
"Sorry sweetheart, you're the one dating me." He smiled. We reached the impala and Sam awkwardly climbed inside. Dean was about to open my door for me when I grabbed his jacket, pulling him close to me.
"Thanks for dinner, you filthy hunter." I laughed. He smirked and pecked my lips, pulling me closer. I pecked him again and let him open the door so we could go back to the hotel.
I flopped on the bed as soon as we were inside the room. Any energy from before was gone. I just want to sleep.
"Crashing?" Dean asked when he finally walked in. I groaned and he rolled me onto my back.
"Want me to take your boots off so you can be comfortable?" He offered. I nodded and he removed them for me. "Clothes?" He suggested next. I laid there and let him tug my clothes off of me.
"Where's your brother? He doesn't need to see this." I mumbled sleepily when I remembered Sam was supposed to be in here. I lifted my hips so he could pull my shorts off easier.
"He's still outside." He informed me. I sat up a little and he pulled my shirt off and let me flop onto the bed again. I started dozing off when he got in bed next to me. He clicked off the lamp and pulled the covers over me, letting me lay against him.
I woke up hearing my phone going off. When I looked at the clock, it was 2:00 am. Dean was warm against my skin, and I could feel him breathing softly in his sleep. Sadly, I tore myself away from him and answered my phone.
"Hello?" I'm sure I sound groggy, who wouldn't?
"Danny, I-I need you to... something happened." Ruby sobbed on the other side of the phone. That's all I needed to wake me up.
"Ruby? Whoa, calm down. What's wrong?" I tried to soothe her through the phone. She hiccupped.
"Mom and Dad... I spent the night at Hannah's and they- they're dead. I don't know... can you just come down here? Please, I-I don't know, what am I supposed to do?" She tried to explain. Her voice cracked and I clamped my hand over my mouth to keep myself from crying, too.
"Ruby, baby its alright. I'll head down there as soon as I ca-"
"I need you here now, Danny!" She yelled at me.
"Okay, alright. I'll head out in about a half hour. I need to get my shit together and get some coffee. Give me a few hours to get there, okay? Can you stay with Hannah until then?" I reasoned with her. Its going to be a long night if I have to drive all the way to get her and back.
"Ye-yeah. She's with me now. Just hurry, okay?" She begged.
"I will. Try to relax a little bit." I promised and hung up. I got up and pulled on my shorts and shirt from earlier. As I was running around the room gathering things, I was trying really hard to be quiet.
"Everything okay, Danny?" I almost ran into Dean as he said it. He put his hands on my shoulders to stop me. "Whoa, did something try to kill you?" He chuckled.
"My sister is in trouble. I need to take baby." I stated. The smirk he had on his face fell and he looked concerned.
"Want me to go with you? I can wake up Sam and-"
"I'll be fine, Dean. Just, please, I need the car." I cut him off. He looked hesitant. "Dean fucking Winchester. Give me your keys, now." I demanded. I need to get to Ruby. If I don't I don't know what she'll do.
"Okay, okay. Here." He pulled them out of his coat pocket and handed them to me. "When will you be back?"
"I don't know. I'll meet you guys back here, though. Bye." I headed toward the door with my wallet, the keys, a few hair ties and my eyeliner.
"Be safe sweetheart." I could sense the concern in Dean's voice, but chose to ignore it. He spun me around and looked at me. "I mean it." He said sternly.
"I love you." I told him before turning back around and leaving. I sped the entire way to get Ruby. The only time I stopped was twice to pee, get coffee, and get gas. Ruby has to be safe. Its my job to take care of her, damn it! I blared Dean's cassette tapes on the radio to help keep myself awake, not that I needed any help. My parents and I weren't that close, but if Ruby dies, I'll never forgive myself.
When I pulled up in front of Hannah's house at 6:30 am, I quickly tied up my hair and tried to look like I hadn't just driven 4 hours to get here. I put on a bit of eyeliner. I can see Ruby's car, so she has to be okay. Once I thought I looked decent, I grabbed my gun just to be safe.
Walking up to the front door, I shoved the small pistol under my belt behind my coat. Then I knocked. A tear-stained, brown-eyed, beautiful brunette face opened the door for me. I recognized Ruby in an instant.
"Danny." She breathed as I pulled her against me. Her hands grabbed fistfuls of my jacket. Sobs started racking her body all over again. I rubbed her back and walked her inside enough to shut the door.
"Its okay, sis. I'm here. You're alright." I calmed her down. Hannah's mom walked into the entryway.
"Danny, I'm so glad you're here. Why don't you come sit down? Did Ruby tell you everything over the phone?" She asked as she led us into the living room. I sat on the couch and nodded. "I'm really sorry. I know you and your parents weren't that close, but it must still hurt."
"I'm alright, ma'am. Thank you. I'm just here for Ruby."
"Why don't I get you something to drink?" She offered. I knew getting my sister and running out would seem strange, so I accepted. She got the drinks and made small talk.
"So, where are you working now?" She asked.
"Actually, I was just over in Missouri. My job travels a lot." I explained. She nodded. "We should probably go, I don't mean to intrude." I faked a smile and stood up.
"You just drove over 4 hours, why don't you spend the night? The guest room downstairs is really nice." She's trying to help us out, I know that, but I'm needed on that hunt. Ruby looked at me like she was ready to leave.
"Thank you, but I really need to get back." I politely declined. She gave me a sad smile and had her husband help me load some of Ruby's stuff into baby. There wasn't much. It was everything she had packed for overnight. I sighed when I saw how little there was. She needs more clothes. When we left I went toward my old house. We need that stuff.
"Danny, what are you doing?" Ruby asked with a shaky voice.
"I need my lore and some of your clothes. Stay here." I ordered her. She didn't object as I went inside and gathered things. The door to my parents room was shut, and I left it that way. I don't want to see them like that. For Ruby I grabbed all of her t-shirts and as many pairs of underwear as I could find, along with some pants and socks. Anything else she needs we'll have to buy. I was about to leave when I saw my stuffed green rabbit next to her stuffed unicorn. I grabbed it and a few blankets and left.
The next 5 hours on the road were boring and tiring. It took longer going back because I had to stop more times for coffee and Ruby had to pee more. She eventually fell asleep in the passenger side. It was noon when we got back. I pulled my sleepy sister out of the car and carried her inside the motel, laying her on Sam's bed. The boys were probably out doing research. I should go help them, but I'm too tired.
After a nap I made more coffee and watched tv, waiting for Dean and Sam to get back. I wasn't paying attention to what was on. All I could think about was what all Ruby saw of my parents. They were probably covered in blood. Did she find them? Or did a neighbor hear screams? I tried not to focus on what they thought when they died, but ended up doing it anyway. I was pacing when Dean opened the door.
"Thank god you're safe." He said and pulled me into a tight hug. I held him back just as tight, letting his scent consume me. This was safety. It was warmth. Its home.
"I'm okay." I promised.
"How's Ruby?" Sam asked, nodding to her, still asleep on his bed.
"She's been sleeping since we got here. Poor thing needs it, too. I don't know what happened." I sighed.
"So is that our next hunt?" Dean asked cautiously, raising an eyebrow.
"No, Bobby or someone else can have it, if there is one. I'm not going back there. But Ruby is going to have to stay with us." I explained. They nodded understandingly. I took a deep breath and hugged Dean again. He didn't pull away or try to let me go. I squeezed my eyes shut and buried my head in his chest before letting go.
"Danny?" Ruby murmured from the bed. I went over to her and sat on the bed.
"Hey sweetheart, any better?" I asked. She nodded. "Remember Sam and Dean?" Nodded again. "We have work to do tomorrow. You're staying with us." I explained lightly. She got up and gave Sam a soft smile. When he opened his arms she didn't hesitate to collapse into them, holding him like he was the last thing letting air into her lungs. She needed it, though.
"So have you guys found anything?" I asked Dean, trying to change the subject. I need this hunt now more than I did before.
"Not much. I'm thinking its some kind of witch." He told me. I nodded. "We can worry about that later. Diner food?" He added as I glanced over at Ruby.
"Sounds amazing." I smiled and he grabbed my hand to head out to the impala. Sam and Ruby piled in the back and I sat up front like usual. When we walked in and sat down Dean's hand grabbed mine under the table. I leaned on him a little and looked up at him. He leaned closer to me and kissed me. The rest of the night went about like that, and I got Ruby a room that was connected to ours and we slept with the door open so she could get to us and I could hear her if anything happened.
