Chapter 2
"Why are you so stubborn, Anna?" the guy demanded. "We just want the note."
"Yes, you and your 'people' have told me that like a thousand times," I said. "Why don't you just accept that I don't have your pretty little note? So can you PLEASE just take me home? You don't even have to make contact with my family. Just drop me on my doorstep like a stork would, and I won't say a word!" I've tried this before, but to no avail. They just keep questioning. And they call me stubborn.
"We can't let you leave yet, Anna," he said, a slight grin on his face. "We just need to know where you hid the note."
"For Pete's Sake, people, I don't have your darn note! Nor will I ever!" I exploded, standing on the chair so I was just a bit taller than him. "If you want that stupid scrap of useless paper, you're gonna have to look in my school's trash can. I have no idea what the heck it is, so just leave me alone!" At that point, I was almost crying. The tears were trying to push their way through, but I wouldn't reveal weakness. I wouldn't show how much I missed my family, how much I wanted to get out. Not yet.
"Your. . .school's trash can?" the guard to my left asked, an almost disbelieving tone.
"Yes, my school's trash can. Some weirdo eighth grader plopped it on my desk in detention so I threw it away. Happy?" I raised my eyebrows.
"So you didn't steal it from us?" the man asked. Did he not listen?
"Nope! I'm guessing that kid from my school did. I don't know his name, but he has black hair and green eyes. Freaky right?" I nudged the guard to my right with my elbow, trying to get on their good sides. He doesn't move. I was just trying to be nice, jeese!
"Okay, where is your school?"
"Woah, there dude. I'm gonna need some help before I tell you anymore. Got it?"
He looked at me with a confused expression. Do I have to spell everything out for these guys?
"Take me home and I'll give you directions," I said, crossing my arms across my chest. "You might find it in the school dumpster. . .if you're lucky."
The man clapped his hands twice and a black manslightly smaller than him came out of the shadows. Where did he come from? I thought.
The men walked off to the corner of the room and started whispering. I could hear parts of their conversation.
"Wants to go home......Drives a hard bargain......Take the offer?......In the dumpster.....Make her work....It's settled then."
The guys came back to the table. "We have a counter offer for you, Miss Anna," the black guy said mysteriously. "We will take you home IF you help us look for the note in the dumpster at your school. Otherwise you will be locked in a room. Our maids will bring you food, but only bread and water." I heard him whisper something about not wasting food on a child or something.
"Why do I have to work? I gave you the information you've been wanting for almost a month. I just want to go back to my family."
"We won't let you go if you don't," the bigger man replied dryly, sitting back down in his seat across from me. So far it seems he has no heart and only cares about his illegal money.
An idea popped into my head. I could escape at the dumpsters. "Tell me more about what I'd do- what the situation would be like."
The guy smirked. "We'd sneak in at midnight. Search all the dumpsters and garbage cans. Once we find the note, we will return you to your doorstep, and we will be gone."
I returned a smirk of my own. "Its a deal." The black guy must not of liked how sure I was, so the other man stage-whispered from his seat, so I could hear perfectly, "Dont worry, Mike, we're hand-cuffing her to the dumpster so she can't escape."
That made me feel a little uneasy. My smirk faded, which reassured the men around me. But no worries, I'll just use the Bobby pins in my hair to unlock myself. Nothing like good ol' cleverness, I thought to myself as the men led me to their own 'jail cell'. It was pitch black, so I just tried to sleep. I'll need my energy for 'dumpster digging'- or should I say escaping. I smiled to myself as I drifted off to sleep.
