Chapter 6: Sickly Familiar
I woke up to the sound of knocking at my door the next day. Groaning I rubbed my eyes and got out of the comfort of my double bed. I put my hair in a messy bun at the top of my head and unlocked my door wondering who it could be at this hour.
"Hello." My best friend Cassie from work cheerily greeted.
"Hey, Why are you here so early?" I asked groggily opening the door wider and letting her in. She had blonde hair that stopped just above her shoulders and she was quite short. She was gorgeous compared to me. She wasn't my best friend, we were close but she doesn't even know about my dad or rather anything in my life from before I moved here.
"Early ? It's 10.30am. It's not that early!"
"Shit I have work at 11 !" I suddenly realised.
"Good thing I brought coffee." She smiled holding up to cups of hot beverages. I thanked her
and run down the short hallway to my room quickly throwing on some clothes, straightening my long dark hair and doing my makeup. I walked back into my lounge room to find Cassie making herself at home on my couch.
"Gwen have you been on the Internet lately ?" She asked slowly while staring at her phone.
"Yeah last night, why?"I asked confused taking my cup of coffee off the table.
"Why was I not informed about this?!" She suddenly asked sitting up straight and shoving her phone in my face. The screen was littered with multiple photos of me and Harry from yesterday. Paparazzi are fast right? How did I not see these last night ?! I studied them closely, there wasn't anything really intimate between me and Harry, we just looked like old friends walking and laughing.
"Look whatever, I'm going to be late." I sighed handing her her phone after looking at the time. I grabbed my bag and keys and waited at the door for Cassie to walk out.
"What so you just don't care?" She asked a confused expression on her features.
"It's just best if I don't think about it. Harry and I are just friends."
"And that's another thing how did that slip your mind that you are now friends with Harry Styles ?! And even then you can't be "Just friends with him"! " she air quoted looking at me expectantly. We walked down the halls and to the stairs while I sipped my coffee.
"I'm sorry, I only met him once and we organised to meet up again but I didn't want to say anything in case he didn't show up or something..." I trailed off. "Besides we are just friends, because asked me on a date and I said no. And he was fine with being friends."
"What the, you can't, how!" She jumbled her words looking at me like I had just thrown a million dollars down the drain. I explained to her about why I said no and about our little hang out session hoping she'd understand.
"Your crazy I hope you know that, but I do understand about your mother and Axel." She finally concluded as we neared the shop we both worked at. We entered and Cassie left to do some shopping since her shift wasn't for another hour.

"That will be £15." I told the customer only focussing half of my attention on them. The girl thanked me and I watched her leave, listening to the door making a ringing noise since there was pretty much no one else here. I looked at the clock again, deciding that I had about 20minutes left. I was getting more and more anxious by the minute. The thought of meeting Harry's friends was scaring me slightly. What if they hated me? What if they made fun of me? I haven't exactly had a good past with boys. Flashbacks and memories of my schooling year rushed through my brain. The name calling and harassment that I received from my class mates back I'm Australia was horrendous. I closed my eyes tightly trying to get my mind onto a different topic. I'm sure Harry's friends are nice. They seemed nice on those videos I watched last night. And even if they weren't, Harry would stand up for me right?
"Gwen. Your free to go now If you'd like?" My boss Mandy said starling me slightly. The around 30 year old smiled watching as i collected my bag. "I'll see you tomorrow." She said.
"Yeah, bye!" I said over my shoulder while opening the door. The sky outside looked slightly greyer than the beautiful blue it was yesterday. I walked down the street slowly with my hands in my jean pockets. These streets were sickly familiar, having walk up and down them every day for the past year and a bit. I walked up the stairs and through the hospital feeling a bit awkward when I past Harry's friends room. Though they didn't seem to notice me so I just went to visit my mother first. I didn't bother knocking as I tried my best to walk in slowly in case she was asleep. The white rooms and boring coloured furniture making the atmosphere duller suddenly.
"Hey sweetie." My mum smiled in a motherly way like she always does.
"Hi mum, how you feeling."
"Fine fine, how about you ?" She lied. I knew she wasn't fine, you could tell. She had lost a tremendous amount of weight and her face was pale and fragile. She looked as though if she moved to much she'd break, or waste away.
"Good." I forced a smile.
"So have you got anything planned for later?" She asked as she normally would. We were always close, mother and I, especially after dad passed away. She wasn't old either only in her 40's. She didn't deserve this, she was kind and caring and always took such good care of me, being her only child. I used to some what blame my self for her illness but she always told me otherwise, it couldn't have been prevented. But I guess what's done is done.
"Well actually, I met this boy..." I start to tell her about Harry and our meeting in the passed days.
"But you said no? Why on earth would you do that?" She asked puzzled as to why I had turned Harry down on his offer for a date after I explained our encounters.
"Well because, mum you know it's not a good time. I want to spend time with you and it hasn't been that long since Axel." I tell her frowning.
"Darling it's been a year! I've already told you, you can't let me bring you down! I want you to be happy, your not treating yourself the way you should be. And he does sound like a lovely boy, I expect to meet him soon." She smiled as she finished. "But just be careful with the fame, I don't want you getting hurt." She added, putting her frail hand apron mine.
"I will." I tried to push a smile as I squeezed her hand. Maybe she was right.
