Kirstie's POV
I sat there playing on my phone. It was like any other night. Homework, dinner, free time. But I had no idea that this night would be different. I had no idea that I could be potentially loosing someone who meant the world to me. Soon the phone rang. I was home alone. I saw that it was the hospital and I picked it up immediately, worried about what happened."H-hello," I said shakily as my body tensed up.
"Hello is this Kristin Maldonado," the lady on the other line spoke.
"Yes and it's Kirstin not Kristin," the lady let out a chuckle. Bad time lady, bad time.
"Kirstin we have some unfortunate news that we have to share with you," I let out a shaky sigh. "Your boyfriend Mitch Grassi is in the hospital from being shot in the stomach." My breathing stopped but I still had a tint on my cheeks from her thinking I was Mitch's girlfriend.
"Oh my god," I said as tears streamed down my face, "will he m-make it?" The lady gulped and I could tell what was coming next.
"We're not exactly sure. He got hit pretty close to his heart. We're going to have to perform a very serious surgery on him. There isn't much chance of him making it," I was sobbing at this point. Mitch was my best friend. Dammit Mitch was my everything. Even if I didn't act like it sometimes.
"Can I come right now and visit him?" I asked eagerly. I need to see him.
"Yes. Just tell the front desk I sent you there," I thanked the lady, got in my car, texted my parents, and drove to the hospital.
When I arrived at the hospital I was a hot mess. My hair was everywhere, I had sweats on, and my face was now tear stained from all the sobbing I did in the car. I ran to the front desk and approached the lady sitting there.
"Hello ma'am. I'm Kirstin Maldonado. A lady told me I could visit him." She nodded and typed something on her computer. She than faced me with a sympathetic look.
"He's in room 267. Go down there and take the first left and he's your first room to the right. Stay strong sweetheart," I gave a weak smile before slowly walking towards his room. Every step felt long and heavy t I managed to get there. I turned the nob and opened the door slowly. I found his mom sitting there helplessly as she cried her eyes out. When she saw me she got up and hug me.
"Hi Kirstin," she said softly, "I'm so sorry," I shook my head and brought her into a hug.
"Don't be sorry. You did nothing," we released from the hug and I grabbed a chair and set it down next to Mitch's bed. He was shaking harshly and Mitch's mom had to calm me down from panicking.
"He's okay don't worry. The doctor says that when he shakes he's just having night terrors. They don't know how to calm him down though," I sighed and took his hand. That calmed him down but he was still shaking. So I started singing.
But now I know.
My heart is strong.
Where you belong, is by my side.
So will you hold?
'Cause time is cold.
But in your soul, I'm standing by.When I finished the song Mitch was calm and I was in tears. I cried onto his hand and watched as every tear landed on it. I looked at it for a second, hoping he would wake up from the magic of my tears... But since this ain't the movies, he never did. Dammit Mitch stop running away from reality! Mitch's mom got up and rubbed my back.
"Sweetie you need to go home now," I nodded in agreement and kissed Mitch's cold head.
"I love you," I whispered before getting up. I sighed as I walked through the waiting room only this time noticing all of the desperate sad faces. I gulped as I got into my car and went home. When I got home my parents immediately ran up to me and hugged me.
"We're so sorry Kirstie," they said slowly making sure it sank in. And it did... I broke into tears. When we released from the hug I looked at both my parents.
"Can I stay home from school tomorrow? I just want to take one day to spend with Mitch," my parents looked St each other than looked at me.
"Sure sweetheart," my mom said sweetly, "if that's what you want than go ahead," I smiled weakly and kissed both of my parents on the cheek. I than ran up to my room and called Scott. He finally picked up on the last ring.
"Yes Kirstie?" He said drowsily. I sighed and laid down on my bed.
"Scott I understand that you were sleeping but I have some news to tell you," I heard some rustling and I folded my arms.
"What happened?" He said alerted.
"Scott, Mitch got shot today in the stomach. They said the bullet hit too close to his heart and he needs to have surgery to remove the bullet," I heard Scott's breath hitch and he let out a shaky breath.
"Oh my god," he said quietly.
"Scott are you okay?" I asked worriedly. I heard him sigh and hum.
"Yeah. That's why my step dad was crying after dinner. They wouldn't tell me. They thought I wouldn't care," that surprised me. Scott isn't cold enough to not care. That came out wrong. Scott just is too kind to not care. That's better.
"Hey mom!" I shouted, "can Scott come over tonight?" I heard my mom chuckle.
"Sure. Just make sure he gets to school as well," I then turned back to Scott.
"Try and convince your parents to allow you to have a sleepover. Oh and try and get out of school to see Mitch with me," he sighed and put down his phone with a big thump. Three minutes later he picked up his phone again.
"Hoying whenever you go to talk to someone please don't just drop your phone and leave," he chuckled.
"Okay mom. Anyways I can come over. They gave me tons of sympathy and seemed to 'admire' how much I cared. I'll walk over." I hung up. Soon the door opened and my mom greeted Scott.
"Mom Scott is coming with me to visit Mitch tomorrow," she nodded her head and hugged Scott.
"I'm so sorry Scott," I than noticed that Scott had tear stains on his cheeks. I gave him a sympathy look as he followed me up to my room. Once the door was closed Scott flopped on my bed.
"Kirst I'm sad can you kiss me," I kissed his cheek, "no on the lips you weirdo," I shook my head.
"No Hoying. We're just friends," he shook his head, got up and kissed me on the lips. I must say, he's a good kisser. But that's just gross!
"Scott you're obviously tired or really drunk," I giggled, "let's just call it a night," he nodded his head giving me open last kiss on my lips.
"Gross Hoying!" I yelled. He laughed and closed his eyes. "Goodnight Scott," I said quietly before turning off the lights. Before I fell asleep for good I thought one thing, live Mitch. Make it through for me. Make it through for everyone just so you can open your eyes and be happy again. Do it for us.
