Chapter Forty-Nine
It was like a dream.
She fell in colour, her dress sweeping her away and spilling with her body down, down, down to the ground. It was red and blue and green and it was a watercolour painting where every shade dripped into the next. The darkness melted through her and she was finally, finally a star.
It wasn't so romantic when she hit the ground.
I stopped breathing. My heart pulsed in my throat and my lungs constricted, tightening inside me. I tried to scream for somebody. Somebody had to help. But nobody could come when I couldn't even make a sound. I grabbed the railing and leaned as far over as I could, searching for Star, waiting to see her body leaping up to laugh at me. She'd stick her tongue out and shout, "how gullible can you get?"
Instead, I saw something else. Her dress fanned out all around her, so I could barely see anything but the blood. The soft pinks and dripping purples were ruined. Every frill was covered in starbursts, explosions of red and black and brown all over the grass around her. Tears filled my eyes. Her body was mangled, her limbs twisted and limp. And through it all I could just see the green of her eyes.
I imagined the flecks of gold inside the emerald and told myself her eyes weren't open because she was dead. Her eyes were open because she was alive.
"Star," I whispered, finally able to speak, because she was there, she was breathing, she could talk and walk and laugh in my face. "Star! Oh my God, Star!" I started laughing. My head was spinning and my stomach was rolling around. I turned left just in time for my food to come roaring back up, puddling onto the balcony at my feet.
Laughing, I peered over the railing again, ready to watch her come up grinning. But she didn't. Still smiling, I pulled out my phone and opened the emergency caller.
