Chapter Seven
"My God, Star, what are you doing!?" I exclaimed, my heart pounding at a million miles an hour. Star started laughing. Apparently, my terror was her new favourite joke.
"You should've... seen... your face!" She wheezed, gasping for air between her laughter. "Priceless!"
I folded my arms across my chest, scowling at her.
"Not funny."
"Yes, funny!" She exclaimed, in hysterics. I wanted to slap that stupid smile off her face. "I have no idea how you can fall for me doing that. It's the oldest trick in the book!"
"Ha, ha. The real question is how on earth you were so sneaky in those heels," I snarled, glancing down at her tall pink shoes under the candyfloss frills. "What a prom queen."
"Speaking of queens, Luca, are you sticking around to see me win Queen of the Party or what?" Her voice was so accusing, I almost wondered exactly what she thought I was doing. It wasn't like I was going to kill anybody just leaving the party.
"No. I'm pretty sure high school parties aren't my thing," I admitted, blushing. "I mean, I didn't even realize there was supposed to be a Queen of the Party."
"Oh, there's not!" She exclaimed, as if I was completely stupid. What did she expect me to think?
"How are you gonna win it, then?"
"Oh, come on, Luca. Most high school parties don't have queens, but this is an event made amongst the stars!" She babbled, making a point of her little pun. It wasn't all that funny, but I forced a laugh.
"You're going to make yourself win?"
"No, not at all. There isn't even anybody else to vote for, silly!" Star giggled. I didn't understand why she was acting all girly and weird suddenly, but I went with it. The girl changed a lot; I mean, she was supposed to be furiously avoiding me right then, wasn't she?
"You aren't the only girl in the school."
"But I'm the only one who organized this party," she retorted, briskly waving off my comment. She was completely unaware how easy it was for someone else to win.
"That doesn't mean you're automatically queen," I protested, but she just rolled her eyes, completely careless.
"Whatever, Luca. Are we cool again?"
I want to say something. I want to say, yes, we're amazing. We were never uncool. But I just say, "yes".
"Good," she grinned, and I saw the switch inside her turn on. The lights started glowing behind her eyes and I couldn't help wondering what else there was to live for. Her fingers closed around my wrist and she dragged me back down the hallway, towards the music and the people and the dancing.
Goosebumps still prickled on my arms, but I don't think they were from the cold that time.
"So, you'll vote me, right?" Star checked, like she suspected I was going to betray her somehow and freak her out. As if I'd dare turn on her; the girl was insane when she was mad.
"I have nobody else to vote for," I sighed, pretty much completely turning around my previous statement on how anyone else could win. Unfortunately this just meant Star started teasing.
"I know you don't, silly. What did I tell you?" She slapped my arm playfully, and I felt the red hot seep into my cheeks.
"You look like a tomato," she giggled, and of course that just made my face turn even more so than before.
