For the next few days, things don't feel normal at all. Everything seem so different even though we're right back to where we were before Brighton came into our lives; I'm working, Jace is doing his thing with Kasen, and Jake has been texting me like we never missed a day in our lives. However, our relationship is very different than it was when Brighton broke it apart; it's almost more mature and we're a lot more sensitive toward each other's feelings. It's all been for the better, but there's still one problem.
No one knows where Brighton is or what he has planned for any of us.
Jake decides to be brave and come see me again about eight days after my break up with Brighton. My stomach is very tingly and although I wish I didn't know why, I do. I don't know how to act around him and as a result, I find myself roaming around my closet for the cutest outfit I have after spending a couple hours perfecting my hair and makeup. I never spent time like this preparing to see him, not even when we went on dates. The best I did was put on a little eyeliner and mascara to spice my eyes up, but right now I look like I've visited Barbie's dream spa for a seven-day makeover.
"Wow, is it Halloween?" Jace asks when I exit my room to go grab a drink of water. I stop and throw a punch into his bicep, which only makes him laugh like a little boy. He also manages to grab hold of my wrists, which makes me beyond angry.
"Don't be such a jerk, Jace! I'm nervous!" I squeak at him, trying to regain possession of my hands, but he won't let up.
"Okay, hold up. You're nervous? You dated this kid for fourteen months and you're telling me you're nervous? What happened to my confident sister?" he asks, letting go of my wrists so he can put his hands on my shoulders and give me a shake. I let him shake me, but all it does is make me irritated.
"Jace, you're also talking to the girl who thought that Jake broke up with her because she wasn't good enough for him and that he didn't have enough trust in her," I bite my lip, ruining my perfectly applied lip gloss, and sigh. "I want this to work so badly and I don't want to screw it up again because I feel like I screwed it up the first time. I shouldn't have stopped trying and I shouldn't have become mad at him. But I did and look what happened. It can very well happen again if I'm not careful."
"Honey, I was talking about your choice of outfit and makeup, but I understand that you're not confident with him and that's fine. You need to build trust again and you will with time. Now, back to your appearance, your makeup is caked on like frosting on a Costco birthday cake. Jake didn't fall in love with you because of how cute you look, which in my personal opinion you're crazy beautiful, but he fell in love with you because of who you are."
"Aw, Jace," I beam, which makes him laugh.
"You're a McFarland, genius," he continues, smirking. "You just have those ridiculously great genetics and that makes you prone to looking hot all the time."
"I'm flattered," I glare at him playfully and give him a big hug. "Seriously, though, thank you. You're the best brother in the whole world no matter how much I don't like to admit it. I think it's bad for your ego."
"Thanks, sis. Now, time for you to go tackle that man of yours," he winks and lets go of my shoulders. I smile and turn to walk away, but I don't get far. One of Jace's fingers, which just so happens to be soaked in some watery form, slides across my face and I can feel the foundation come out of place.
"YOU ARE SO DEAD!" I scream, but I hear his door lock right as I turn to punch him for real.
Brothers...
I quickly go to the bathroom and start wiping the rest of it off, exposing my freckled face and growl under my breath. This is so not perfect, but I guess it'll do. At least he didn't ruin any of my eye makeup or I really might of had to kill him.
