As soon as I'm done at work the next day, I run over to the store to pick up a few items for college. Thankfully, their items are cheap, so it won't cost me a fortune to gather some basics. I figure it's a good time because I have two hours between working and getting together with Jake, so it will kill the time effectively. I also got a nice paycheck for my first month of working, so I have a good amount of money to work with as well.
"Where are you going, Samantha?" my dad asks as I gather up my purse and my car keys.
"Quicky Mart?" I say, walking toward the garage. "Why?"
"Will you pick up some ginger ale while you're there? My stock has randomly disappeared and I need it in case I get stomach problems."
Jace is so dead...
"Your stock?" I ask, playing along. "It disappeared?"
"Yeah, do you know anything about that?" he wonders. "I bought a brand new twelve pack of my favorite brand of ginger ale last week and it's all gone! Who would've taken it?"
"Maybe Mom had some?" I suggest, trying to avoid lying.
"I'll have to ask her. Anyway, here," he hands me a ten dollar bill, "is some money to help pay for it. Use as much of it as you can to get as much ginger ale as you can. If you have any left, it's yours."
"Gee, thanks, Dad," I grin. Even if it's a couple of cents, that's still worth it. "See you later."
"Bye, sweetheart," he waves, throwing his work bag over his shoulder. "See you tonight!"
I close the door to the garage behind me and hop in my car. I'm about to start backing out when all the sudden a human body jumps up from the drivers door and yells, "BOO!".
I scream bloody murder and my body jumps violently in response. It takes me a minute to catch my breath before I realize who it is, but unfortunately the discovery doesn't help things.
Never have I had this great of urge to kill someone...
"What the heck was that?!" I scream at him, getting out of the car after shutting it off. He's still laughing his head off and it makes me even more angry with each breath he takes.
"It's just as fun as Jace said!" Brighton giggles like a little girl. "You are such a scaredy cat!"
"Let me give you a little advice, pipsqueak," I growl angrily. "If you enjoy living, you'll take those scrawny little legs and get out!"
"Aw, babe," he coos as soon as he catches his breath. "No need to be angry with me. I'm just flirting."
"Hasn't anyone provided you with the "Flirting for Morons" book?" I breathe angrily.
"No?"
"Oh, that explains some things. I'll let Jace know. That'd make a useful birthday present," I say in a bitter tone.
"You know what? Your sarcasm turns me on," he winks at me, coming closer. I take a step back, running into my car door abruptly.
"You know, your whole entire physique is a turn off," I say promptly in retaliation. He stops walking and looks down at himself in confusion. I watch him observe his body and then look back at me with questioning eyes.
"Really?"
"Um, yeah?" I say, although I don't actually mean it. As much as I hate the kid, he does have nice muscles...
"Babe, if this doesn't turn you on, I don't know what will," he waggles his eyebrows and strokes his fingers against his biceps. It takes all I have not to burst out laughing at his arrogance.
"You wanna know what turns me on, dimwit?"
"Oo, what, baby?" he winks dirtily, folding his arms over his broad chest.
"It turns me on when you're at least five or more miles away from me so I don't have to see that screwed up thing you call your face ," I snap before climbing back into the car.
Sam: 1. Brighton: 0.
I leave quickly, only getting a brief view of his surprised face before I speed away. I feel extremely angry at him for intruding on my family, but especially Jace. Not only that, but I can tell the exact reason he's flirting with me, and it's definitely not for an actual relationship.
At times like these, I'm extremely grateful for Jake and how he good he is to me.
After picking up some college basics, and my dad's soda of course, I drop it off at my house before heading straight for Jake's. The whole time I'm home, I'm constantly looking around me to make sure Brighton doesn't pop out from corners, but thankfully he doesn't and Jace is still here, so they're obviously not together.
Thank goodness...
When I get to Jake's, he is out waiting for me and it makes me feel better about all my problems. I get out of the car and run straight into his arms, giving him the biggest hug in the world.
"Good afternoon, beautiful," he grins down at me, rubbing my back gently.
"Hey, how's my favorite boy?" I smile, kissing his cheek.
"I'm definitely better now that you're here. It sounds cheesy, but it's true. What about you?"
"I'm feeling super lucky to have you," I tell him.
"Oh yeah?" he winks playfully. "Why's that?"
"You'll never believe what happened this morning..."
