Niall couldn’t drive us home because the fans might see, so I took the initiative and took the keys from my Mum ad Dad. It was a long ride home. Not only because things were on my mind but also because my Dad kept giving me advice that made him seem hypocritical and more importantly, things that I didn’t even need to know. Things that sometimes even made my intoxicated Mum hit his arm.

I ignored them mostly, concentrating on the road. We were almost home, the highway had traffic but it was moving faster than usual. I went with the flow. The driver in front of me had a blue Toyota. The right break light was burnt out; I knew because it never lit up. I made sure to be extra careful. I checked my mirrors and I stopped listening to my Dads rambling. 10 miles until we were home.

Suddenly the car in front of me came to a screeching halt. I slammed on the brakes and just-barely missed the car. I looked in my rearview mirror; the man behind me was close but still a safe distance behind me.

The left lane was still moving though, slowly but surely. We started to move again. The traffic was slowly gaining speed when in the rearview mirror I saw a man in the left lane, speeding and swerving. I looked around for something but I couldn’t go anywhere. I looked back again, he was speeding still and I could already see it happening. The car in front of him didn’t even see it coming.

They hit, the man in front of the crash turned his steering wheel idiotically to the right, into our lane. It snipped the bumper of the car behind me and I saw it coming straight for my side of the car. I closed my eyes because I knew it was coming. Our lane was coming to a stop.

I opened my eyes and saw the impact. My head snapped towards the windshield; my seatbelt saving my head. It slammed back against the headrest, and that’s when I looked over to my parents. They were both wearing their seatbelts, which saved them from getting their head smashed, but that doesn’t mean the slam against the head rest wasn’t any less painful. They were unconscious.

I tried to reach for my phone but it was in the back where I threw it. I didn’t think there was a need for it. My seatbelt was fastened tightly and I couldn’t reach my phone.

The man in the car in front of me immediately got out of his car and ran towards me. His face was scrunched up in worry. “Miss? Miss, are you okay?” His hands were against the car door.

“I’m fine, just dizzy. My Mum and Dad though….” I was tired; I could feel my shoulders slouch against the seat.

The man took out his cellphone and held up a hand, “hold on, I’m calling 911.” He walked away from the car back to his own and urgently spoke into the microphone. His accent was familiar, I had heard it before.

I could hear the sirens getting louder. The man was standing in front of the car. Checking on my parents and me every once in a while. He told me not to close my eyes no matter how tired I was. He told me I just had to wait for the ambulance to get here and I could sleep.

I looked in the rear view mirror and noticed that the ambulance was pulling in behind the crashed cars. I sat there looking. I didn’t want to turn my neck in fear of the pain. I glanced to the right and saw my Dad in the passenger seat, still unconscious.

I saw a paramedic starting to come over to my car. “Miss, are you hurt?”

I shook my head slightly but winced, “no,” I stated, “but my Mum and Dad….”
