All at once emotions begin to flood my body. I want to throw myself into his arms and hug him. "I can't explain now Eira, but he's right, we have to get out of here. Can you jump?" my dad asks Alexander. The question catches me off guard. How could my dad know that Alexander could do such a thing?

Alexander shakes his head no. "I've had too many jumps in the last 2 hours, I am lucky I can even stand." Another ear piercing screech penetrates the air. The sound of it sends chills down my spine. This one is longer than the first and sounds like a wounded animal.

"We have to move. Now! We have time to catch up later." says my dad as he comes completely out of the shadows to help Alexander to his feet. "I have a car waiting just a block over."

Porch lights come on as people are no doubt going to be coming out to investigate the sounds that they have just heard. I imagine that the screech could have been heard clear across town. The extra light from the houses is a bad thing if we are going to conceal our getaway down this alley. My dad grabs a hold of me and gives a quick squeeze to my shoulders. He briefly smiles before pushing me ahead of him, telling me to move. It's no doubt that he wants to put himself between the danger and me.

It takes mere seconds to get us all moving through the alley that is now partially lit up by the lights of neighboring houses. Alexander is assisted by my dad who has him under one arm. Our feet smack the pavement as we try to stay as invisible as possible ducking and weaving around broken glass and puddles from the melted ice and snow. In the distance are the faint sounds of sirens as Snowspell's finest are no doubt on their way to investigate the noise complaints and what just happened. We aren't sticking around to see what they find. We near the end of the alleyway and find a beige minivan sitting in wait with the doors open. It's not long before we are all safely stowed away in the vehicle.

Just as the final door closes, one last shriek fills the air, this one sounds louder and more agonizing than the others. My dad hammers on the gas. It takes only a second for the tires to find traction on the partially snow covered road throwing us all back in our seats at the mini-van speeds away from my latest home. I can't help but think that this escape feels oddly familiar as the van presses on faster into the night.
