The roof begins to glow a pale yellow which gives way to much more vibrant shade. It looks as though the sun were trying to focus its rays on a single solitary spot on the roof of the gymnasium. The yellow eventually gives way to a bright white glow which causes Laney, Alex and I to shield our eyes as the light is enough to illuminate the entire gym. Then suddenly the roof explodes inward and a gigantic ball of flame flies past all three of us. "DRAGON!" yells Laney. "We need to get out of here! NOW!" I feel Laney grab me by the shoulder and begin to pull me away from my spot as I watch the dragon fly into the gymnasium. It's actually quite a sight to see it hover in a single spot with its wings outstretched. It is much longer than I originally thought but it looks exactly the way I would have imagined a dragon looking from the fairy tales that I read with my dad. Its scales look like impenetrable armor that glistens in the light of the fire that sits above it. The roof now has a ring of fire that is roughly twenty feet wide and continues to spread. I can see a few stars when I look past the dragon into the night sky. It's really quite majestic, picturing the dragon with the ring of fire and stars backing it. What's not majestic is the look that it gives me as I lock eyes with it. It has the exact same color as Jared and they are fueled with just as much hatred. The dragon hovers a bit lower to the ground and launches another ball of flame towards us which we are all able to narrowly dodge. That fireball hits and sticks to the phys ed office doors, melting a huge hole in it.
The gym doesn't take long to catch fire and the danger increases dramatically for us, the dragon doesn't seem to mind. I quickly look around for any scouts or Achlys that may be left, but they appear to have vacated, leaving the dragon to finish us off. I guess that they aren't worried about my pendant getting melted from the dragon's' fire.
"Do we know any way that we can beat this thing?" I yell out to both Alexander and Laney. I guessing by the silence that I get in response the answer is no. The fire and smoke begins to grow inside the gymnasium and it becomes harder to breathe.
"We need to split up!" yells Laney. "Draw it away so we can get outside. We're not going to last much longer with all this smoke and the building may come down before too long."
Before I can even muster a syllable, Alexander runs out into the path of the dragon. He begins to wave his hands at it trying to draw its attention. The dragon only looks briefly at Alexander, but when it does, I form a long spear-like icicle and will it from my hands at the dragon. The dragon almost senses it coming and rolls to its left but not before the icicle tears a gash in its wings. The dragon lets out a shriek that is even louder and more terrifying than the Achlys. The sound of it makes me want to cover my ears but my hands stand at the ready, for what though I have no idea.
The dragon continues to flap its wings trying to remain airborne but the tear is too much and it lands on the gym floor, tucking its wing into its body. As the dragon lands, it gives me enough time to find a safer spot to be.
Alexander quickly returns to my side. We are both partially hidden away from the view of the dragon behind some of the indoor bleachers.
"Got any other tricks? And where did Laney go?" I ask. He only offers me a half hearted smile and a shoulder shrug.
The cover that we get from the bleachers it partially to block the view of the dragon, but also to provide some cover from the fire that is now totally out of control. The championship pennants that were won by the school are now completely adding fuel to the fire and the roof is starting to sag from the intense heat. The fire that was on the phys ed office door has now spread and has completely engulfed the phys ed office itself. The glass explodes from the heat. The dragon doesn't seem to notice or care. Its duty right now, is to dispose of us. We need to get out of here. It the fire doesn't kill us, the dragon most certainly will.
