Wirt began to slip his fingers away from her hand, when her grip tightened. "Beatrice. I need to go to bed. Let go." Wirt finally said coldly. Beatrice began to shake and quiver. She couldn't fight back the tears anymore. She hated to feel weak. It made her feel- Well, weak. Wirt stood there for a moment longer before trying once more to elude her grasp. But this time, Beatrice grabbed his shirt. She definitely wasn't letting go. Wirt sighed and sat down beside her bed. Time began to pass when he finally spoke again. "Beatrice. All I do for you and to you is to protect you. You know that right?" Beatrice sniffed and nodded her head against the bed. Her hand softened and she let go of his shift, slowly drifting off to sleep. The next morning was completely quiet. They didn't speak to each other that morning. They got dressed, they ate breakfast, and they sat on the bus. They weren't mad at each other or anything. They were stressed. Beatrice was sad and depressed, while Wirt was tired and confused. In first period, Sara approached Wirt with a wide smile. "Hey, smart guy. Get some good rest? Did you dream about me?" Sara asked very smugly. Wirt rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. "Yah. I think I remember having a nightmare last night." Wirt answered back very plainly. "Oh come on. Don't tell me you like that cheap red head better than me. She's a weirdo. That's all people are talking about, you know." Sara said. "No. I didn't know. She seems completely normal to me." Sara looked at him like he was crazy and blind. "Are you serious? Come on, she's not smart, she can't relate to other kids, and she looks like a blue bird. Have you seen what she wears? Does she wear any other color?" Sara said. Wirt didn't say anything. He just sat there, arms crossed and looking down at his lap. Beatrice looked over to Wirt and Sara. She didn't know what they were just talking about but she wished she did. All she knew was that Sara was leaning on his desk, talking to him with a very sly look on her face. Like she was better than her. Beatrice didn't know what to do. Sit down and not risk getting beat up again, or see what she was talking to her boyfriend about. Beatrice slowly slid out of her chair and approached them. Her hands where sweaty and she felt stress come over her again. Wirt and she hadn't talked all day but now Sara's chatting it up with Wirt? Beatrice inched towards Wirt, feeling silly just because she was jealous that he was talking to another girl more than he was towards her. Beatrice was finally within ear shot of them and she put her hand on Wirt's shoulder and shook it. Wirt slowly looked up from his lap and looked up to see Beatrice trying to pull a smile. "Beatrice! Hey! I'm glad you're here." Wirt said. That quickly made Beatrice feel less out of place. And what Sara said next made her feel more out of place. "Oh. I didn't know this school taught people with special needs." Sara said, taking a strike at Beatrice's heart. Beatrice didn't even try to fake a smile after that. She just stood next to Wirt and tried not to look offended. "Come on Sara. Stop being a jerk. She's a lot smarted than you think. And she's a lot cooler than you say." Wirt shot back at Sara. Beatrice blushed with flattery as Wirt stood up for what he thought of Beatrice.
