Chapter 6

What were they talking about? Lucas Fierra was in the group with them. He was the most popular boy at school and all the girls had a giant sized crush on him including Mya, but she would never let him know that, she couldn't, she would never be so foolish as to believe that she could be considered good enough for Lucas.

Mya's heart skipped a beat as Lucas disengaged himself from the group and made his way over to her. She was carrying a small bag of groceries that were supposed to last at least two weeks, she wasn't sure if the handful of items would make it.

"Hi." Lucas gave her his award winning smile and she felt as if she would melt.

"Hi." He wasn't supposed to be talking to her, she could see the small group of guys behind him trying to cover their laughter, they were all so childish, it was hard to imagine that all of them were the same age as she, sixteen years old.

"I can't talk right now, I have to get this home to my mom; she's not feeling well," Mya muttered, in fact her mom was stale drunk and she had left her throwing up on the floor.

"Maybe I can help you carry your load," Lucas suggested the smile never leaving his face. From where the three boys, Lucas' best friends, stood Mya knew they could hear the conversation.

"No thanks," Mya muttered and one of the boys bent over with laughter and she could have sworn she heard him say. 'Oh my gosh, that whore's refusing Luke.'

"Excuse me!" Mya had been so upset. Clearly Lucas had come to her on some bet or dare that he could get her into bed or some such nonsense, like mother like daughter no doubt was what they thought. Her mother was a whore that sold her body for money and the whole school assumed that she was one too.

"Please, I just want to talk." Lucas stepped directly into her path and their bodies collided. The impact had been so startling that the groceries had slid from Mya's hand and scattered about on the ground.

"Leave me alone!" Mya had quickly bent down to pull together the few items and put them back into her bag.

"That's my fault," Lucas apologized and dug into his pocket for his wallet.

"I don't want your money."

"Services first Lucas," Pete yelled.

Pete was a big, strong dark skinned boy that looked like he could try out for 'wrestlemania'. All of Lucas' friends were big, though Dave and Ray were Caucasian. Mya never liked any of them; they were total jocks with mush for brains.

"Cut it out guys!" Lucas turned back to shout.

"Leave me alone," Mya repeated as she tossed the last of the items into the shopping bag and straightened up.

"I really like you," Lucas insisted his voice dropping to little more than a whisper now. Her heart lurched for just a moment at the sincerity in his voice and then it sunk again. Even if Lucas liked her he wouldn't be willing to let anyone else know because she was just a whore's daughter and he was the son of the richest man on the island. No, the best thing she could do was to blow him off right now, the further she stayed away from Lucas Fierra the better for her.

"You like me?" Mya deliberately raised her voice loud enough so the three boys a few feet away from them could hear. It certainly got their attention; they stopped giggling and turned to stare over at her. "Well, I don't like you or your friends Lucas Fierra."
