I ran. For days I ran. The sun, the cold, the loss consuming my thoughts. The clothes I wore slowly wearing away. Ripping, tearing. Making the coldness enhance. They found me. Miles upon miles in the woods. Taking me back to that horrific place.
I woke up from my nightmare and reached for my pocket knife. Closing my fingers around its leather handle. It felt like home. The only thing I had left of it any ways. I looked over at Jeba, her angelic face more beautiful as the moon cast a mysterious glow on her features. I wanted her in my arms. I weighed the possibilities that she would wake up and decided against it.
I had to ask her now. 'Wait? Now?' I screamed at myself.
"Jeba?" I whispered
"Cane?" Jeba muttered obviously only half awake. I'd have to word this carefully.
I took a deep breath and let it out how could I put this? "Will you go back with me?" She sat up awake now. She looked like I had just punched her.
"Back to America?" her voice squeaked.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked." I sighed staring at her freckles, they looked like they were dancing across her cheeks.
"I didn't answer" she said lying back down on her branch. Ya that's right she made us sleep in her huge tree 20 feet of the ground.
"Is that a yes?" I breathed
"No" she smiled "Its a possibly"
My brow furrowed. Possibly? I wasn't sure about girls since I lived in an all boy orphaninch half my life but I knew that 'possibly' meant 'give me a while to think'. "I'll accept that." I smiled lying down too.
"So what's your story?" Jeba said turning her face towards me. Since when did she care? Why was she asking? Where did that come from? I looked over at her hating the way her eyes made me melt. I had to tell her. I wanted her to know everything about me.
"Well." I sighed "it's a long story. But I guess..."
"Good." She said swinging her legs over to my branch and latched on.
"Monkey." I uttered she smiled looking at me expectantly. "I didn't answer." I quoted her.
"Don't do this!" She moaned
I didn't want to cause her pain "alright alright." I sighed this girl could really sway a guy. "Once upon a time, there lived a family of 4. My mom my dad and my little sister and me.We lived in harmony with Europe, Africa, Mexico. You know them?" She nodded staring at me like I was her prize. "Then as the icebergs began to melt more rapidly then before my family panicked packing in a flurry of clothing and boxes. That was the day Asia attacked, I was seven. My little sister 4. And being siblings I took her into the cellar running from the troops and there guns. We were in the cellar for 2 days. Scream gun fire and hunger filled days. I fell asleep the third day letting my guard down and leaving my sister continuously crying in the corner. They found us that day. That day that I fell asleep. Now I don't know where any of them are." I said my voice cracking.
"I didn't know." She peeped wrapping her arms around me. I put my head in her shoulder crying like I never had before. "Cane, it's ok. Shhhh. Cane, cane it's ok." She whispered in my ear in an attempt to comfort me.
I fell asleep. Listening to Jeba's soothing comfort. Why was I the child all the sudden? The guy is supposed to be strong for the girl.
My dream restarted different this time I was running with the most beautiful girl at my side. The thing in my mind to protect her from them and from myself. But why?
