Canes POV

Black dark emptiness... And a hard pounding on my skull.

I sat up feeling a large burning in my back.

"Agh!" I groaned my 'scratch' turning to molten lava. I lied down again on the wet and cold bed. "Ahhhh" I said relieved that the pain had subsided.

"Hmmm, Jeba?" I said reaching my hand over to the other side of me.

It was cold. I sat up. "Jeba?" My voice became a pit of worry.

Jeba... Jeba...Jeba... My voice echoed. Was her room really that big?

"Cane?....cane...cane...cane..." Her voice filled the room and my mind. She's ok. I smiled in the dark. She was here.

"I've missed you...you.... You....." Wait that wasn't what Jeba. The voice was very high pitched and sounded like the girl had cried recently.

The room exploded with light. "Oww!" I moaned upset that she had disturbed the perfect dark.

"Cane." Oh my god. A little angel said her curly hair shorter, cut to her shoulders. It was wild and in a frenzy around her face. Her face was the perfect olive color and her eyes big and green and beautiful.

"Frule?" My voice cracked. I was at a loss for words. I thought she was dead... With mom... And Auntie Gred.

"Where's mom!? And Auntie?" I said feeling like a child on Christmas. I can't believe they're all okay.

Her face grew dark and sad. My heart sank. She was the only one left in the family.

"Frule is he awake yet!?" A male voice screamed. Frule looked at me with a look of dread.

"Yes, Dad." She yelled back. Although it seemed as if the last word was aimed at me.

My mouth dropped and I shook my head. "No, no Frule No!" I screamed.

A man walked into the doorway. His black choppy hair perfectly straight. And his dark blue eyes full of hate instead of love.

"Hello Cane." His mouth ripped into a sneer as he said my name.

"NO!!! DON'T YOU DARE PUT MY NAME IN YOUR MOUTH!" I said hating my position of either sit up and be in pain or stay put and look weak.

So I sat up wincing in pain. He chuckled deeply, menacingly.

"Frule get the boy some medicine." He turned his head and pushed Frule out of the doorway. Closing it behind her.

"Listen, Boy, we have some things to talk about." And with that he locked the door. "First off, you are being tested. Don't try to escape because we are the good guys. You are going to end the war. You and a number of other children are going to be the beginning of the underwater race. It will save us all. Because at the rate the icecaps are melting the world will be swallowed in no more than 2 months. I bet you didn't notice did you, Boy? But our world is ending. And unless you help us it will be the end of humanity as you and I both know it. So all I ask of you is to help me prevent this. Help me Cane. Help us all." His words sunk deep into my skull leaving a deep hole where all of my common sense used to be. As if I was drugged.

"I'll do it. But not for you." I said finally. "For Frule." My words felt so final so full of emotion that I knew he couldn't ever take her away from me. I mean he already saw my strength years ago.... When he killed almost my whole family in front of me. And just before he killed my other sibling I beat the living crap out of him.

I stared at his scarred face. "For Frule." He nodded. And it made me sick that he dare feel care for her. Or anything.

At that moment I realized I wasn't going to do this. I knew we had to get out... But how?
