Chapter 1

(that's Jupiter above)

Blurry, confusing and messy.

That moment when all the words from someone's mouth is mushed together by a fork and you can't; for the life of you, understand what's being said, looking like a doe eyed child in a classroom full of the "smart kids,"and hopelessly following the teachers moving hand with space balls for eyes; not getting a single word of it, that's how I felt now.

There's only ever one word left to say to this situation...

"What?" I ask frantically, does this mean I've lost my job?

"Jupiter calm down it just means this guy is on trial and if he's good enough then he'll stay on," Joe explains with hand gestures included, like any good teacher.

"Are you saying my job and is still intact?" I ask my manager, I cannot be jobless at this time in the year, job hunting now seems bleak with everything you hear in the news; even the job centre is useless sending people with master's degrees to go work at pound land as a volunteer (meaning they work for free) and being jobless in a busy city like this—I'd be homeless.

This is not the time to be lucky to eat beans on toast, no,  it really isn't... I just love food too much.... And my life too goddamn much.

"Yes, Jupiter your job is still as you say intact." He says and I wipe the back of my hand on my forehead in relief imitating the similar looking phone emoji. "So this new guy he's comin' in for the late night shift today and I want you to show 'im the ropes tonight, although I don't think he'll need much help," he finished and I let out a huff of annoyance.

I'd have to come in today (again) for the late shift—I always opted for the day shifts just for one reason only—I wouldn't have to deal with so many jerks and drunk-off-their-faced-kids. "Joe, can't someone else take on this new guy?"

Joe smiled, the wrinkles on his eyes showing just how worn out Joe's become running a restaurant bar/nightclub, "you know I can only trust you with these matters Jupiter, you're the only person who doesn't tolerate people's shit. Meaning if this new guy's slacking you'll tell 'im."

"I guess... However, I do have one condition, Joe." I say and he nods for me to continue. "If I have to come in for the late shift then can I not do the day shift because, you know, a girl needs her leisure time?"

"Yeah, course Jupiter." He says, smiling, patting the wood of the bar like she was an old cat purring under his touch. Joe's love for this place made me remember all the things I admire: Hays, Ollie and (did I mention Hays?)

"Thanks, I'll be off then—see you later and this new guy," I reply, jumping over the bar and taking my bag.

"Bye Jupiter but, remember the night shift starts at 9 pm." He calls and I nod a gentle smile before crossing the deserted dance floor and walking out the door.

o.o.o

Walking into the place I call home, I dump my keys on the kitchen counter, where I always leave them and hook my bag to the door handle. I step back into the corridor and turn into the living room to find a familiar long figure stretched on the sofa.

"Ollie, have you seen Hayley?" I ask him, and he drags his eyes from the TV to look at me.

"Na, why, do you need her?" He answers, it annoys me so much when people answer a question with another fucking question, but, I won't be mad at my darling little Oliver on my sofa he's my girlfriend's brother, like the little brother I never had.
