"And she'll only be here for a little while, I promise you," Taylor assures her mother the next morning. Her plan has worked. She has casually told Andrea about the girl sleeping upstairs whose parents are "busy farmers that cannot take care of her as of late."

"Poor girl. Who are the mother and father?" Andrea asks, whisking pancake batter for breakfast.

"You wouldn't know them. They all just moved here from, uh... Great Valor."

"Great Valor?" Taylor's mother gasps just about holding onto her mixing bowl. "What's a city girl like her from the Capitol doing down here in little old Carpentior?" she asks in total awe.

"Didn't like the city life?" Taylor says with a small shrug.

"Father probably owns a factory like all the wealthy blokes up there anyway. The girl will thrive no matter where she is," Andrea chuckles and goes right back to mixing.

Taylor hastily returns to her bedroom to check on Karlie. She is still dressed in her clothes from last night - a blue cotton shirt and dark pants. But she looks quite cozy all the same, snuggled deep under the blankets with Taylor's stuffed bear in her arms. Light snores and quiet mumbles escape from her slightly agape lips, giving Taylor a glimpse of her baby fangs. She bravely takes a closer look at them and makes the bed creak slightly as she leans in.

Karlie mutters something in her sleep causing the girl to move back. Eventually she decides to wake Karlie up in the best way possible.

Taylor kneels down beside the bed and gently takes one of Karlie's hands which hangs over the edge. She lovingly strokes it with her thumb. Bringing it up to her mouth she presses her lips against it, all the while keeping her eyes on the girl.

"Mmm," Karlie murmurs beginning to stretch into life. A tiny smile creeps across her face as she recognises the sensation of Taylor's touch.

"Good morning, sunshine," Taylor greets in a hushed voice, honoured to be able to see such a sight.

"Kiss me," Karlie mumbles sleepily rolling over on her side to face Taylor. She keeps her eyes delicately closed.

"I am," Taylor smiles and plants three more tender smooches on Karlie's hand. The girl smiles back in response and yawns against the pillows, baring her fangs in all their glory.

"You have to get up now", Taylor whispers, brushing her thumb over Karlie's hand. "We have to brush our teeth and get dressed."

Karlie opens one eye; the dark pupil is forced into a thin beryl ring. It's piercing. And yet it's so...soft. Innocent.

"I smell food," Karlie says and stiffly sits up.

"You've a talented nose," Taylor chuckles and stands up from her kneeling position. "Mom's making pancakes."

"What is a pan cake?" Karlie asks.

"It's just a flat sort of... It's not really a cake, it's like... Um... You know what? It'd be better if I just showed you!" Taylor says and brings out a hand to help Karlie out of bed. She swings her legs around and stands.

Karlie lands with a firm thud on her feet and falls into an unexpected hug with Taylor.

"You're always so warm," Karlie muses. "It must be so wonderful to always be this warm."

"Why is it that you're always cold?" Taylor asks, tightly hugging Karlie back.

"Vampires cannot make their own body heat because we are very active creatures. Getting hot all the time would make us very impractical. We only make our own heat when we're... Uh, never mind."
