There I was, sitting on that same bench as before waiting for Cheif O'Neil. This time though, once he was done discussing what to do with me I would finally be going somewhere, my life would finally move on. Oh gosh, but what if my life gets worse, I mean I could end up living with a terrible family, or for all I knew, I could end up sleeping on the streets... Suddenly, out of no-where, a voice cut through my day-dreaming.
"Hey, calm down, It's not like you're going to sleep on the streets, we're taking care of everything. You can lighten up that expression of yours." A black lady I had never seen before said to me with a smile that indicated she was trying not to laugh.
I just stared up at her for a few seconds completely dumbfounded. Did she just read my thoughts, or did I say them out loud ?! "Uhh, yeah, I know." I answered sheepishly.
This time she let out a little chuckle. "I'm saying this because you looked like we were about to cut your head off or something... Don't worry though, things can only get better. Listen I'm your Psychologist, we'll be seeing eachother once or twice a week depending on how you're doing. It's very possible that we will have to see eachother twice a week during your first couple of months of life changing adjustments. But relax, we'll have fun together." She gave me a bright smile as if expecting one in return but I just couldn't do it. She's going to be my Psychologist?! All I could think of was, 'why her?'. I mean she doesn't seem to realise how terrible my life is at the moment at all, in fact she's just making a bunch of jokes out of it!
"Where are the restrooms?" I asked clearing my throat. I had to get away from her and refresh.
"Oh, just down the hall to your right, I'd best be off, I have to talk to an officer about you to figure out what we're going to do with you. Our first appointment will be tomorrow evening at 6. Looking forward to it! Goodbye"
'Wow, well I'm not looking forward to it,' I thought. In my oppinion, this lady was just fake and helpless.
Once I got back from the restrooms I found Chief O'Neil looking for me with a few files in his hands.
"Oh! Maya, there you are, please follow me, I'm going to introduce you to a social worker who will help you find a place to stay for now until we get this all sorted out."
We walked down the hall back into his messy office and greated a tall, slim, uptight looking lady who was wearing brown heels and vintage glasses. She looked quite scary but as they say, 'never judge a book by it's cover.' So I took a seat and waited for something to happen.
"So here is Maya's file, Mrs Abate. I suppose you have been informed about her situation?"
"Yes, Chief Officer and I have just as well been informed about her family situation. As it appears, Maya has an Aunt that lives on the other side of the country in Oregon. This Aunt is her mothers sister and seems quite adequate to take on Maya's responsibility. Of course we will have to inform her of Maya's existence and the death of her sister first as she may not know about all this. The two siblings appear to have lost complete contact due to personal difficulties."
This caught my full attention. My mum has a sister? I have an aunt? How come I didn't know this before?! I wonder if she's nice. Maybe she's like my mom! Oh my gosh I hope so...!
"I see. Well we should get in contact with her straight away. But where can she stay this week? Because she definately won't be going all the way to Oregon tonight. Is there a foster family you know of who could take her in for a few days?"
"Yes, there is actually. I'll call them right away."
As the social worker left the room to find the nuber and phone the family, Cheif O'Neil looked at me and sighed.
"This must be quite difficult for you Maya... As soon as the social worker comes back, she'll take you to your home so you can get all your belongings together. You wont need to take everything, just enough for about a week or two. Afterwards, when you move into your permanent houshold, we'll help you choose what's worth keeping or not because I'm sure your parents have a lot of things you wont need." He paused to check the time and resumed. "Well it's time for a little coffee, would you like anything Maya?"
I just shook my head.
"Ok well I'll be back in a minute."
Just before he left the room I turned around and called him. "Cheif O'Neil?"
"Yes?"
"What will happen if I do go live with my Aunt?"
"Well you will have to change schools of course, meet a new side of the family, make new friends, settle in to a new town... Your life will change dramaticly but in a very good way."
"...Ok."
As he left I just stayed seated looking down at the floor and thinking. Thinking about how different my life was from everyone elses, how much my life would change in only just a few hours, how wierd it would be to meet my moms sister and integrate the family... But out of all of that, Only one thing kept coming back to my mind. My long lost best friend Giovanni.
Once I left, would I ever see him again?
