Chapter Six

Mohatu's Reign

"You will not hunt at the water hole. You will not harm a perfectly healthy animal nor any young. You also may not hunt out of our borders." Asali was instructing the hyenas of the rules in the Pridelands.

Mashaka groaned and rolled her eyes. "Maybe you should just tell us what we are allowed to kill." She muttered towards the queen.

Asali disregarded the rudeness seeping from Mashaka's voice. "Please let me finish. You may not kill any more animals than what is needed to sate your hunger. Also, you may not harm any animal coming towards Pride Rock-they tend to need help-and do not-"

"-so what you're saying is that we may only eat the elderly and ill? Are you stupid?" Mashaka interrupted once more.

Asali did glare a little this time. "Yes. It is a term Mohatu like to refer to as the 'Circle of Life'. We eat those who are ill or elder or just cannot go on and in return the herds are promised the safety of the young and healthy."

Mashaka chuckled. "You're joking, right?"

"If you do not wish to follow our rules, then you can leave and I'm sure there will be no problem returning to enemies again." Asali warned.

Mashaka sighed with irritation. "Very well."

The clan left to rest, and Asali heard someone approach. It was Uzuri.

"Your highness, are you alright?"

"Uzuri, my friend, I grow more and more tired with each passing moment." She replied. "The hyenas will need constant tending to for a while."

"Perhaps you should rest? It will do you good, I'm sure." Uzuri assured.

"Oh, I couldn't. It does no good for a queen to rest while her kingdom is up and moving." Asali shook her head.

"Asali, I tell you this as a friend, not your advisor, you need the sleep. You're always up with Uru, and now that Ahadi is here, you will only grow more tired. Why not rest for a little while? I'll wake you." Uzuri promised.

Asali smiled slightly. "Thank you Uzuri, but I'll be alright. I'll turn in earlier tonight, that's all."

"How is little Ahadi?" Uzuri wondered. "Sina was telling me all about him yesterday. I felt rather terrible, because Kiburi and I have always told her never to trust rogues. My poor girl seemed to think poorly of him."

"Ahadi is no rogue. He may have been brought up in a rogue family up until now, but anyone could see he was never built for it. He has the heart and mind of a Pridelander." Asali told her friend.

"Perhaps it was even lucky that his father left him behind, poor thing. If I ever come across that lion I will make sure he knows what he did was wrong." Uzuri paused. "I could never even think of leaving my little Sina behind to fend for herself."

"Well, unfortunately, Uzuri, Ahadi's father doesn't think like a Pridelander. He is a rogue, and rogues always do what best for themselves." Asali paused to look over at Uzuri and then sighed. "I think I will go take a nap. Please do watch the hyenas for me."

"Of course, your highness. I will awake you immediately if anything happens." Uzuri promised.

"Thank you." Asali responded before standing and walking into Pride Rock to rest.
