Chapter Eleven
Mohatu's ReignDawn approached, and Uru sat expectantly at the edge of Pride Rock. She turned her head behind her to find her father walking towards her.
"Good morning, father." Uru smiled nervously.
"You're up early, my child." He sat down next to her with a yawn.
"You always say a good ruler rises with the sun." Uru replied proudly, sitting up slightly straighter.
"Are you nervous, Uru?" Mohatu sighed, knowing very well that was the reason his daughter was awake.
Uru contemplated her response for a second. Of course she was nervous. She was deathly nervous, but there was no way she'd admit to that. Especially not to her father.
"A little, I suppose. Shouldn't I be, though?" She asked sheepishly, looking at her king and father.
"Of course, Uru. The fact that you're nervous means that you care." He smiled with approval. "But don't worry, you'll do great. I'm sure of it." Mohatu assured his daughter, wrapping a paw around her.
Once the Pride had risen, Uru's nervousness slowly subsided. Ahadi was by her side, explaining how he knew she could do it, and how she would do great.
"Uru, my dear, it's time." Asali grinned to her daughter.
"Yes, mother." Uru bowed her head down before standing up and walking towards the rest of the Pride.
"Oh, and Uru?" Asali stopped, gathering Uru's attention. "You're going to do fine, my princess." She smiled.
Uru returned her smile with confidence. Everyone kept saying that she could do it, so it must be true. Uru took a deep breath before looking to Ahadi and her parents. Then, she walked down Pride Rock and headed out on her first hunt.
Uru was to go after a herd of zebra, and they were all at the watering hole. Uru knew that she wasn't to go for the young, or the healthy. She didn't really want to go for a wounded zebra, but an elder would be harder for her to chase down. Even though her leg had healed nicely, it still pained her every now and then. A wounded zebra it was then.
She watched the herd carefully, keeping her belly near to the ground as she pawed closer. Usually the Pride hunted in groups, but this time, Uru was on her own. She had to prove she was strong enough for her place in the pride, just as Sina had to prove she was strong enough to be an advisor.
Her gaze locked onto a zebra straying behind the herd as they moved along. This was her prey. Uru had to make sure she remained dead silent as she stalked it, any sound would alert the entire herd, and she would have to start all over. The zebra limped by its front right leg, so that's where it would be the weakest. Uru carefully stalked through the tall African grass and circled around. Once she had gotten close enough, she inhaled deeply before readying herself to pounce.
As she leapt up, the grass rustled louder than she'd thought. The herd had been alerted, so she quickly jumped up onto the zebra's back. It began to buck its hind legs roughly, fighting to kick Uru off. The princess struggled to dig her claws into the hind quarters of the zebra, and he managed to throw her off.
Uru tumbled into the dirt before jumping back to her paws and racing after it.
It took a couple seconds to catch up to the zebra, and Uru was panting tiredly by the time she leapt up again. She'd have to finish this quickly or lose the prey. She dug her claws into the zebra as it bucked wildly. Uru had begun to slip off, but she cautiously worked her way up the zebra's back to his neck. There she tired bit down harshly. The zebra collapsed to the ground, defeated but not dead. Uru panted for a second before laying down and suffocating the zebra with her mouth. Then she sat up tiredly. She'd done it.
