"Alright mom, yes. No, I- alright. Okay. Yeah, I gotta go. Bye mom. Yes I love you too. Okay thanks, bye." I sighed as I hung up, shoving my phone back into my pocket. I entered the coffee shop, going straight to the counter where Evelyn already had my order ready.
"You okay? You don't look to good," she said, a hint of worry in her eyes. "I'm fine, it's just that I was planning on driving up to my parents' place tonight, but my mom has basically forbidden me from driving. Like, I'm a grown man with my own car, I can drive it if I want." I grumbled.
"Maybe you should listen to her, the roads can get quite slippery this time of year." Evelyn replied, fiddling with her fingers. "Whatever, it's to early to be deal with this." I mumbled, taking my things and walking over to my table by the window.
As I took a bite of my muffin I looked up and noticed the boy with the glasses sitting at the table in the corner, just like a couple days earlier. I watched him take a sip of his drink, before flipping through the pages of the book he was reading. Then he took another sip and repeated the process.
He must've felt my intense stare since he looked up and almost immediately made eye contact with me. His cheeks turned a light shade of pink before he gave me a small wave. I waved back, feeling my own cheeks heat up.
He stood up, picking up his cup and book. I could feel my stomach erupt in butterflies as he walked closer, the only sound being his shoes hitting the floor and the few people around us talking quietly. But the butterflies disappeared as fast as they came as he threw away his cup and walked out the door.
I looked down at the table in front of me, feeling embarrassed that I thought he was actually coming to sit with me. I looked back up, this time my gaze focused on everything beyond the big glass window.
Some people were hurrying to work, others going for a jog. One lady was pushing a baby stroller with one hand, the other pressing a cellphone against her ear. There were also some kids running to the bus stop, hurrying so they wouldn't miss their ride to school.
And then I saw him again. The boy with the glasses was walking into one of the many brick buildings, his figure soon disappearing behind a pair of large dark wood doors. I recognized the building as the public library, a place I use to go to all the time with my parents when I was younger.
Looks like now I have a reason to go back.
