I walked down the busy Chicago street, dodging a few people as I made my way towards the small coffee shop I went to every morning. I smiled as I saw it coming up, the familiar wooden sign signalling that there was fresh brewed coffee and warm muffins inside.
As I came up to the building I pulled open the dark oak door and walked in, being met with a warm environment, much better than the cold, fall air outside. "Hello Pete," a soft voice spoke as I walked up to the counter. "Hey, Eve." I smiled back at the short, brunette woman.
Her pink lips curled up in a smile, causing her crows feet to show around her dark brown eyes. "You're gonna have the usual, I'm guessing?" She asked, raising one of the eyebrows above her dark brown eyes. "Yes ma'am." I chuckled as she set a to-go cup of dark coffee, and a blueberry muffin in front of me.
"Thank you," I smiled back at her before walking over to my usual table, a small metal table that was next to the big window of the shop. I set my food down in front of me and just people watched as I ate. After a while I heard the small bell above the door chime, indicating that someone has walked inside.
I looked over to the door, seeing a man walking towards the counter. He had on a black jacket with a red cardigan on underneath, along with some black pants, boots and a fedora. But his most noticeable feature was the pair of black rimmed glasses sliding down the bridge of his nose.
He thanked Evelyn as she handed him a coffee before he walked to the back corner of the shop and sat down at one of the booths. He must've felt my stare, considering he looked up and our eyes met. The corners of his lips turned up as he sent me a small wave, causing me to blush.
I sent him a wave back as I shyly looked back down at my half eaten muffin, still feeling his bright eyes on me. I peeked up at him, seeing a sad look on his face as he looked down at the cup in his hands. I wonder if he's okay.
But it's none of my business so I quickly finished my muffin and threw away the trash before taking my cup and walking out the door, but not before sending Evelyn a quick goodbye.
