Chapter 2

In the morning, when the calico kit woke up, she didn’t feel the warmth and comfort of her mother. She didn’t smell her sweet scent, and she didn’t see any paw prints. Rosekit sprang to her paws meowing “Mom?” over and over, looking in all of the directions of the looming forest. Her fur was fluffed up in fright, and she was wide-eyed. Rosekit parted her jaws and inhaled as hard as she could, trying to get the faintest trace of her mother. She got absolutely nothing but earthy smells hitting her scent glands. Rosekit, whom turned 5 moons old today, shrunk down onto a log and began to quietly sob. She shook her head and continuously whispered “No.” This went on for quite a while. Rosekit’s tears streaming down her face sogged the moss on the log that she was leaning on. That particular day was cold, and drizzling. The sky was a dark shade of grey, as if it knew what the day held for the calico she-cat. When it started to rain harshly, Rosekit forced herself to stop crying and looked up at the sky. She remembered the cats that she was told of, and decided to search for them. The Clan cats.  She did not do this right away, it was now storming and Rosekit needed shelter. Her stomach growled as she sped underneath a fern bush. She curled up and soon fell asleep, the sound of the storm actually feeling soothing to her. Rosekit could relate to the storm, just piling up your anger and letting it set free finally. But Rosekit never let out all of the angers she had found in her short life. And she would probably find more later on, though.

When the kit awoke, the sun was shining and a rainbow spread across the sky. The tree’s branches were hit very hard, some were scattered on the forest floor, and some were about to snap off. The bush that Rosekit was under lost most of its leaves. Her pelt was bedraggled, wet, and most of all muddy. Rosekit needed strength for her trip to the clans, so she went out to hunt. She smelled the air to see if she could find any prey scents, but sadly the storm washed out almost all of the forest’s smells. Luckily, a squirrel was nearby trying to chew into an acorn, its bushy tail easy to see. The calico kit crouched low to the ground and stalked to the squirrel, remembering to keep her tail low and to keep light on her paws. Finally, Rosekit did a powerful leap off of the ground, putting all of the power into her hindquarters and landed messily onto the squirrel’s tail. She quickly injected her claws into the creature’s tail and scraped it. The she-cat then clamped her jaws onto the squirrel’s body, and it fell limp with a squeal.

                I was lucky that time

She quickly devoured the squirrel and set off to the clan cats. Her mother thankfully pointed her the way that would lead her to a clan’s territory.

“She probably did that because she had already made her decision,” Rosekit muttered with a low growl as she padded on the still-wet earth. But then a pang of sadness hit her. She did it for a reason, I know it.

Rosekit went deeper into the woods, really frightened of what might happen to her, but also the tiniest bit excited. She continuously padded, occasionally looking around at the scenery. The scenery was lush and growing; the woods were feeding off of the storm’s water. Underpaw, the grass that was once dead was beginning to liven up again. The rainbow in the sky faded away, but the sun for once was shining in front of a sea of light blue waves and puffy clouds. It set a great mood, but Rosekit did not feel it. She didn’t think much of it, and she was determined to get to the clans. When her belly growled, she didn’t stop to hunt. When her paws felt like stone, she kept moving. Birds chirped up above, but they were impossible to see behind the canopy of leaves and branches.
