Under the Pond

We had barely started to walk again when we reached a stop to the path, and right in front of us lay a giant pond.

Mytho sighed," Of course." I turned around to look at him and he gestured at the pond, "You should know by now, that nothing in this world is as it seems. This pond is one of those things. It's......it's where I first met you."

This pond was where I came from? So even as Princess Tutu, the first place I had seen Mytho was at this pond. It was almost funny, how I was destined to keep repeating my story like this. I started to step towards the pond, intending to find out what was so magical about it. I thought I saw a glimmer in the water and leaned in.

"Stop!" Adelberto grabbed my arm, and dropped it when I looked at him,"Something's wrong with the surface on the pond."

I glanced down at the pond and couldn't see what he meant. All I could see was my reflection staring back at me. But I leaned closer to the pond and I could see someone standing next to me, Fakir?! I looked around me wildly, but he wasn't there, only in the reflection in the water. I leaned down to be even closer to the pond and I reached my hand toward him.

Mytho screamed, "Duck don't! You'll--", but a hand suddenly grabbed me and pulled me down into the water.

I couldn't see anything for a while, but I could hear Mytho and Adelberto calling my name. Then suddenly I saw a flash of light and noticed I was at the bottom of the pond. Why had Fakir dragged me down here? I turned around to look at the person holding me and it was definitely not Fakir. Because Fakir as I remembered didn't have blond hair, a tail. Unless the magic of this pond was that it turned you into a female mermaid.

The mermaid smiled at me and put me down, "You didn't really believe that it was your knight did you?" I was bewildered by how clear her voice was. Also how I wasn't struggling for breathe. Even as a duck I would have come up for air by now.

"How am I able to breathe down here much less talk?"

I didn't notice I'd said my thoughts out loud until the mermaid answered me. "You can do it because you're one of us."

"I'm what?" I looked down to check to see if I still had my feet, and the mermaid started giggling.

She calmed herself down and managed to speak "You're a tragedy. Just like me."
