It was daunting, wandering along the huge halls with the knowledge that I was not one who was favored in the land, and being alone did not help much either.
Using the directions that Jia gave me, I made it to the dining hall safely, but I was thoroughly shaken up. My limbs were shaking like jelly, and if I wasn't clenching my jaw, my teeth would have been chattering.
The long golden doors to my destination were open, and I glided through them, feeling like a princess for but a moment.
Eyes upon eyes were staring at me. Jia did not tell me that I wasn't dining alone with the Odin, Thor and Loki. Suddenly, I felt much more nervous, and became frozen in place.
Quickly, Loki was by my side. He must have either heard my thoughts or sensed me tense up. Whatever way it was, I was just glad to have him to help me to my seat.
"Are you all right, Lady Avallone?" Thor questioned as soon I was seated. I smiled warily at him.
"Yes, Thor, I am fine, just surprised somewhat at the crowd." I glanced around the room, my gaze countered by countless others. I quickly looked down, feeling inferior.
"We are all glad to hear this, and now we must discuss more important matters. Lady Avallone, you have been granted the gift of immortality by my late wife, and we will respect that, however, you will not be granted the gift of staying here in Asgard. Though you are immortal, you are still of Midguard, and you shall return hence you came," the All Father instructed.
I nodded, fully accepting the justness of his decree. However, I did not agree with what he said next.
"Also, your relationship with my sons will not continue. I will not have them disgraced any more than they already have been."
My reactions were slow, but I knew what I was doing.
I was running.
No one followed me, though I am sure that both Loki and Thor would have tried. I didn't want to be followed anyway, so when I did not hear footsteps behind me, I was relieved.
I knew not where I was running to, I just ran. I ran until my legs could carry me no more.
It happened that I stopped right outside a small forest. Sitting against a tree, I fought to catch my breath. I guess that the strength of breath of an immortal had not yet come to me.
But, I knew that the physical attributes of an immortal were slowly appearing. I could feel my body changing. My hair was growing faster than normal, and it did not feel greasy anymore. My fingers became soft once again, like they were before the days I worked.
"You are alarmed at the news," a deep voice said in front of me. I glanced up and immediately recognized Heimdall. He was at least one friendly face I was happy to see. That is, if he was even a friend.
"I am, and I also do not know who to trust anymore?" I said with a sigh. Hoping he would catch my hint, I eyed him out of the corner of my eye.
He chuckled and asked if he could sit. Now sitting, he replied, "Yes, it would seem that the whole of Asgard has not been overly kind to you while you have been conscious during your stay here. But, I will tell you that what you heard this morning was not overly true, and you will most likely not need the weapon that is hidden in the folds of your dress."
"I forget that you can see everything," I mumbled, drawing the blade from where it was hiding and dropped it to the ground. "I do not know what to do, or think about what Odin has told me. I do not wish to end my friendship with Thor, nor my relationship with Loki." Happy scenes of our past together flashed through my mind, and I felt the tears well up in my eyes.
Heimdall sighed. "I do not know either, and I have no advice to give you, except that it would be wise to go back as quickly as possible, ask for forgiveness, and accept the fate that has been chosen for you. Though it may seem bad at first, it may turn out right in the end."
I studied his sincere face for a moment, and then concluded that he was right. I was expecting the worst of what Odin had said, and hadn't even considered anything else.
"Thank you," I said, rising up and brushing the dirt off of my dress.
"You are welcome, now go, while there is yet still time to make amends," he instructed, motioning for me to get going. I gave him a thankful smile one more time before flying across the ground with my feet.
The journey to the palace seemed much shorter than the journey away, but I did not mind.
Hastily, I made my way inside, and almost sprinted down the halls. But, I managed to stop myself from doing so. I already had a bad name, and since this did not seem like the place I could run full speed in rightly, I thought it would be wise to keep to a fast walk.
The dining hall was the first place on my search list, and rightly so. Everyone was still dining there, including the royal family. It was hard not to turn eyes as I strode through the door. I most probably looked a mess, with twigs in my hair from the one time I fell into a bush while running away, and breathing heavily.
I made my way over to the King's table with my gaze lowered. I tried my best to look repentant, and I do believe it worked.
"I apologize for my hasty behavior before. I was shocked and in denial. I thought I could run away from my problems, but that it is not possible. I am here to face whatever is thrown at me, whether it be leaving Asgard and forgetting that I ever knew you all, or anything else, I am ready." I had not meant to give a speech, but it seemed that way.
"Very well. Sit down and eat something child, for you must be famished," Odin said, smiling at me and beckoning to the table that still had food on it.
"Thank you." I filled my plate up with mostly green foods, except the pork. I was indeed hungry. I guess the run I took had increased my hunger greatly.
We all sat in silence as I ate. It was awkward.
Once finished, I glanced up, surprised to see everyone in the dining hall gone, except for those at the table I was it. Thor and Loki were joking around, being the brothers they used to be when they were younger, while Odin stared off into space, his lips moving but no sound coming out.
I studied him more closely. It was like he was in some sort of trance, and I felt that there was something off.
Nudging Loki, I gestures to his father. "Is there something wrong with him?"
"No no, he does that often. It is when he is talking to the Kings of old," Loki answered, smiling at me. I returned it and suddenly felt like singing, despite the horrible news I had heard around an hour before.
Instead, I started humming the tune of Ice Ice Baby. Interesting song, I know, but it is one to love.
Beside me, Loki chuckled, and quickly hugged me.
"I know what Odin said surprised you at first, but I am glad that the advice you received knocked some sense into you." He tapped on the side of the head while still hugging me.
"How did you know that I received advice?" I questioned, pulling him away and looking him in the ways.
Within the blink of an eye, my question was answered. He morphed into Heimdall within seconds and then back again.
"You stupid trickster, up to your tricks again!" I exclaimed, shoving him off his chair. He landed on the floor with a thud, and we all started to laugh.
"Quiet children, I have come to a decision."
