ASEL TO THE SIDE------------------>
I felt Earl get up in the morning, and i groaned when the bed moved. I rolled over and snuggled into the blankets, not wanting to get up. He sighed, but didn't try to get me up. He had put me through hours upon hours of practicing making people feel certain ways, seeing he lines in the new vibrant color, smelling, feeling sniffing things with the new sense of smell. Yeah, i was ready to kill him by the time he let me come home.
"Come on," he said, after he had showered and gotten dressed. "I have to get to work and so do you."
"Can i shot you?" i hissed, sitting up, trying to tame my hair.
"No," he said, pulling the blanket from my hands. "Up." I was suddenly regretting letting him sleep in the bed. I had moved to Cole's side, breathing in the very, very scent that still lingered. "I want to make the bed."
I sighed and got up, moving towards the bathroom. I opened the door and found that he had organized everything. "Earl, do you have OCD?"
"Just a little," he said, and he was sheepish, but i only laughed. "I'm going to work."
"Where do you work?" i asked, realizing i didn't know. I moved to my closet to get clothes.
"I work at that one club downtown," he said, and i looked at him. "Better you not know until that last drink."
"Whatever you say," i said, and he sighed.
"Bye," he said, and he kissed my head. I listened to him moving downstairs and he started his car. When i was sure he was gone, i sat down on the chair that was in the corner of the room. I didn't know what to think of this, but i knew that it was too late. I got up and finished getting ready, moving down to my work area. I knew it was always a matter of time before Earl go to it.
I sat in the chair in the middle and began staring at everything, my usual morning routine, but everything was just as confusing as it usually was. I needed to see Asel, talk to him so i could know what was really going on. I grabbed my keys and drove to Asel's. He was based not that far From Richard and i was glad. I got there and hurried up to his office. I had learned long ago that i had to dress up when i came here. I had on a blue dress and when his secretary saw me, she buzzed me through without a word.
"Was wondering when you would get here," Asel said, and i looked at him. I noticed that he was getting older, but not by that much. His hair was darker and his beard had filled in more then it had been. "I take it you have one more drink?"
"Yeah," i said, sitting down. "Now, you set this up for a reason, Asel, not just for desk work."
"No, you're right," he said, grinning. "You've been trained in field work, and there's a certain employee that has nine months before she has a leave."
"You did this so i would take over for Katie?" i asked, knowing that it really wasn't the only reason.
"Of course not," he said, grinning. "With the power you're getting, you'll be able to lead her places she couldn't have gone before. What Earl's given you is a gift and it'll come in handy."
"Why would demons be getting into werewolf affairs?" i asked, leaning forward.
"It's spreading into their species," he said, eyeing me. "Earl did what he did on his own accord, and it's a good thing. Three demons went missing yesterday." He threw the files at me, and i caught them in the air, my eyes widening. "Good."
I opened the files and scanned them. I didn't know them, and that would help me. "You know for sure that they're related?"
"Yes," he said, and then his eyes turned dark. "We found this next to them." He slid two pictures across the desk to me, and i clamped my mouth shut to keep from losing my stomach. They were two bodies, two i had studied for years. Larry and Lucy. "Whoever's doing this, they're losing control of the situation and they killed them."
"Have you told Matt yet?" i asked, and i couldn't take my eyes from the pictures.
"No," he said, shaking his head. "I was going to send you and Katie to do it, but you should go home and change first."
"Yeah," i said, standing up, numb. "I'll get Katie and we'll head over there right away." I left his office, feeling numb, but i knew it was some of him seeping into me. I found Katie and she hurried to catch up with me.
"Where we going, partner?"
"I have to change," i said, "and then we have to visit Matt." The way i said it tipped her off that something was off and when she realized what it was, she snapped her lips shut. I drove back to my house and quickly changed into black pants and a light black jacket. When i was done, we drove to Jules' and Matt's house. We both knew he was home on his lunch break.
Katie knocked and when Jules answered, she took us both in and turned white. "Jules, we need to see Matt." She stepped back and we walked in. Matt was in the kitchen and he turned, but when he took us in, his grin faded. "Matt, we have some bad news."
"You found them," he said, and i nodded. "After all this time."
"Yes," Katie said, and i let her take point with this. I did not want to have this conversation, but i figured i had to pipe in eventually.
"Can i see them?" Matt asked, and i met Katie's eyes.
"I don't think that's a very good idea," i said, remembering the pictures. He made a chocked sound and i turned away. "I'm sorry, Matt."
"We'll let you know when you can come and get them," Katie said, and we made our way out. Once we were outside, she stopped, and i saw tears in her eyes. "If we've found Lucy and Larry, who's next?"
"I don't really want to find out," i said, moving towards the car. "Let's check out the scene, shall we?"
"Yeah," she said, and i grinned at her. We had all known that they were dead, but actually saying it was different. We both knew that this was our chance and we weren't going to mess it up. Once we were in the car, she looked at me. "So you and Earl..."
"What did Asel tell you?" i asked, looking at her.
"He's a demon," she said, and in her voice i knew she was fully aware of what that meant. "Have you already taken...."
"Yeah, and soon will be the tenth," i said, realized in would be tomorrow, well two days, but really early.
"Have you two slept together?"
"He's gay, Katie," i said, and she sighed. "What?"
"I can't picture you with anyone besides Cole," she said.
"Katie, he's dead," i said. "There's no doubt about that."
"Alright," she said, letting it drop. We drove in silence to the scene, which was still blocked off with werewolf magic that i didn't completely understand, but it let us through, without the usual resistance that i got. "This is where...?"
"Yeah," i said, and then i heard the clink. Both of us looked up and i saw a figure in the ally way. "Hey!" Katie and i took off after him, but he was fast. I switched my color radar on and found he was a werewolf, but not. I knew that color, all too well. "Katie, vampire possession!"
"Shit!" she hissed. "Keep after him, i'll get help." I nodded and continued running after him. I knew it was a him with the way the breath was coming out. I was gaining on this figure and i was surprising myself. I had given up running and Earl's blood was making me really fast. I launched myself at him and tackled him to the ground. He grunted and we began rolling around, trying to get the best of each other.
I didn't know how they knew what to do, but it was like my legs knew the body and knew exactly what to do. It was so dark in the ally that i was glad. Not even my new eyes could get a clear picture of who this was, but his color was changing. It had been white at first, but then it flashed the darkest blue i had ever seen. The intensity sent me flying backwards and the person staggered to their feet. I watched them, seeing a face i hadn't seen in eight years.
One i thought had been dead.
One that was now standing in front of me, holding his head in pain.
"Cole?" i whispered.
