Chapter 7.

As I sat behind my desk in English taking out my textbooks and notebooks, I notice some people staring at me. Actually, it wasn’t only some people. Everyone was looking at me. The girls were whispering to their friends as they tried, and failed, to hide the fact they were staring at me.

Out of habit, blood rushed to my cheeks and I raised my hand to my face, just to make sure there was nothing out of place.

Then it finally clicked. They weren’t staring because something was wrong; they were staring because something was different. I was different. In fact, the chances were that half of the people in that room didn’t recognise me because I looked so different and the other half didn’t even know who I was to begin with.

I couldn’t help but smile when I realised the results of my whole make over.

I was even more shocked when Kim Wentz strolled into the classroom five minutes late and gave me a casual smile. She smiled at me as if we were friends and waved. Kim Wentz waved at me. She sauntered down to where I was sitting and turned to Kristen Howe, the girl sitting next to me.

‘Move.’ She ordered, looking as though she would have killed Kristen right there and then if she didn’t do as she was told.

Kristen looked up at her with fear in her eyes as she began to pack her things back into her bag. She then turned and looked at me. A flash of something crossed her eyes. Kristen and I were sort of friends. Well, we weren’t really friends so to speak but I would have always thought of her as an acquaintance.

Then I realised what it was that was in her eyes. It was disgust and disappointment. It was almost as if she expected me to tell Kim to back off. Like that would ever happen. I mean, Kim Wentz was, well, Kim Wentz. The truth was, I would have killed Kristen if she didn’t move.

Once Kristen left and found another seat in the classroom she continued to stare over at us, as did most of the other girls. Thank god the teacher was late was all I could think to myself.

‘Hey Kazz.’ Kim greeted as she plopped down at the desk beside me. Again, she said it as if we had been friends for a life time rather than two almost strangers.

Why did she call me Kazz? How did she know already? I guess word travels fast around the popular crowd.

‘Hey Kim.’ I said with an unsure smile. After all, I had only ever spoken to Kim once or twice for as long as I had known her.

‘Hope you don’t mind that I’m sitting here but when Jessie said she had been talking to you and that you were cool I was totally like OMG I so knew her first. You know, because we are friends, right?’ She babbled, looking at me.
