Maya nestled deeper into the bed, trying to soak up the disappearing heat. She couldn't help but smile, recalling Lucas's words from last night, and the way they fell asleep.

She felt finger gently sweep the side of her face, and a soft voice call,"Maya, time to wake up."

She took a deep breath through her nose and slowly opened her eyes, training their vision on the face in front of her.

She smiled at...

Her mother?

"Mom?" she croaked, sitting straight up.

Katy smiled. "Sorry honey, I didn't mean to frighten you. I have a day of today, so I decided to make some breakfast. It's ready and waiting on the table." She walked away, giving Maya one last smile.

Maya barely returned it, then flopped back onto her pillow.

It was all.. a dream?

Of course it was.

Lucas had called her beautiful and talented and amazing.

Of course it was a dream.

After getting over the rush that the dream had given her, a feeling of guilt began to set in.

Riley.

Maya had a crush on her best friend's crush. What kind of friend was she?

Granted, Riley and Lucas had all of middle school and freshmen year to make up their minds, and no one had done anything.

She knew Riley and Lucas weren't dating, and she and Lucas were so not dating, so why did she feel like she was doing something wrong.

She and Lucas were just best friends, right?

Right?

Maya groaned, felling like this was too much information for the morning. She rolled out of bed(literally) and went to the bathroom.

She looked in the mirror, looking at her messy hair and bright eyes and sad face. She tried smiling, but it quickly turned into one of disgust.

Ew, stop looking at yourself Maya, you don't need to go blind.

Maya opened up the Matthew's door, seeing four-no five- familiar faces.

"Shawn!" Maya cried in delight, bounding towards him and hugging him.

She hadn't seen him in weeks, and she was happy to see him.

The day was off to an excellent start.

"What's up, kiddo?" Shawn asked, smiling.

She shrugged and continued talking to him.

Honestly, Shawn was like the father Maya wished she had. She had, in middle school, wanted him and her mom to be together, but she knew now that that was impossible.

"Maya- time to go!" Riley called, looping arms with Maya.

"Bye guys!" both girls chorused out, then head out the door.

"Hey guys," Lucas said, waking up to the girls.

Maya nodded but inside her heart was running tracks. She recalled her dream and let a tiny smile wander onto her face. They were about to head into class when someone tapped Maya's shoulder.

Ms. Luther.

"Maya, it's time for your testing."
