"Madelynn, what... what is this?" Ryan Keys asked with a shaky voice. I didn't look at him in fear of his reaction, the most I could do was bite my lip and look down.

"MADELYNN PIPER REIN!" Mr. Keys yelled. I looked up a bit, wondering how he knew my middle name. But curiosity stumbled as my wrists started to ache as his grip got tighter on my arms. I knew better than to keep quiet and get hurt by someone else. If I went through pain, it was self inflicted.

"B-bruises are going to form...and, and how do you know my middle name?" I mumbled.

"Oh shit, I'm sorry," he smirked a tad, "I'm a teacher, your name is in the school records. Hold on a moment."

I watched as he went behind his desk and pulled out a tub of various markers and pens.

"Are any of those cuts or burns new?" he asked seriously.

I shook my head slowly, wondering what this man was up to.

He took out a single blue marker and pushed up my sleeve, revealing my largest scar, and drew a large heart right on top of it. He looked at me and smiled gently.

"W-why?" was all I managed to get out, I felt myself tearing up yet again.

"Why? Because—" he was cut off by the door opening.

"Because I was too scared to do it myself."

That voice.

"I thought you would never show up," said Mr. Keys as Elliot stepped through the door to where I was.

We were currently sitting cross legged on top of one of the tables.

"Well, I'll leave you to it. But first, I'd like both of you to know, I like you two the best out of all the students I've had. I once had siblings, but they were lost in a fire years ago. You two are the closest things to them."

Mr. Keys took a deep breath and looked at Elliot and I and smiled a bit. We knew this wasn't easy for him.

"Lock up when you guys are done, I think I'm going home."

He kissed the top of my head in a brotherly fashion and ruffled Elliot's hair, nodded, and left the room.

"Eli, how did you know about my wrists..?" I asked, breaking the silence.

He scratched the back of his neck and replied," Your er, brother told me. But Maddie, I don't care."

Those words broke my heart, I felt my eyes watering again.

"Wait! Not like that! I care, so much!"

He grabbed my arm and took a skinny black pen and started furiously drawing. Five minutes later, he pulled away and let me see what he had done.

It was a picture of me in a gorgeous dress that flowed until the ground, my wrists showed, in great detail I may add. There was something off, I looked decent, almost pretty. This wasn't me. This COULDN'T be me...

"It is you."

"Did I just say that out loud?" I asked, slightly terrified.

He nodded, laughing slightly.

"Don't doubt your appearance. Please don't harm yourself. We may not have known each other for long, but I would hate to lose you," he said earnestly.

"I-I can't promise that."

I was ashamed, I knew that it wasn't a promise I could keep.

I was meant to make you smile! rung his phone.

"Yeah. Sorry babe."

Babe?

"Okay, I'll be there soon, I love you. Maddi, I have to go, my girlfriend needs me. Call me later though. Bye."

And with that he rushed out the door and left me in the classroom alone.

Girlfriend?
