Whenever i had hurt myself or something of similar nature, my dad had always said that cowgirls don’t cry, well I guess I learnt that lesson a little too well.
"Honey I’m home." Yelled my father in his usual weary voice.
"Hey dad, Mum’s out with for dinner with her work buddies."
"Ok." He said
My father, Martin, was a very busy man, working 2 jobs in the city made him tired and weary all the time. Having grown up in the country he has always loved fresh air, open spaces and horses and has passed his love for horses on to his only daughter, me.
Martin moved, as a job promotion he had been waiting for finally came up, except that it was in the city, but Martin took it anyway, which left my mother, Jane and Martin to pack the house up and move to the city just in time for me to be born.
I’m 15 now and I desperately wish to see a horse in real life, the closest I get, are the stories my dad tells me, pictures on the internet, the paintings I do of these majestical creatures or my daydreams, where I’m flying, winning Grand Prix's and I have a bond with the horses, a bond like no other.
"Hazel "..."Hazel, dinner's ready." I hear my dad call as I quickly log out of Face Book and shut the lid of my laptop.
"Coming dad." I answered as I run down the hallway of my parent’s pent house on 6th Avenue, all newly refurbished.
“Mm. mm, this looks good, what is.”
“Briing briiing, briing briing.” I was cut off.
“Hello.” My dad said rather surprised, while sitting his fork down.
“Hi this is Dr Briggs calling from the hospital.”
“What’s wrong?” my dad interrupts.
“Umm well it’s about your wife; she has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition.”
“I’ll be there as soon as I can.” He sobs.
“Dad, dad, what’s wrong?” I choke, now really worried.
“It’s your mother, she’s in hospital. Come on we’ve got to go. NOW.” He yells while rushing out the door.
The drive seemed endless, dark outside, street lights blinding my watery eyes and reflecting off my tear stained cheeks.
Dad ran in ahead of me and by the time I stepped foot in the door I was being towed along by my dad down never ending sets of hallways and stairs, until at last, out of breath we stopped dead in our tracks.
Dad slowly opened the door afraid of what we might have seen, but a nurse walked up to us .
“You must be Martin Jacobs? She asks questioningly.
“Yes, yes that’s me. H-how’s my wife?” He asked while nodding his head in her direction.
“Well she is in a critical state, but if she doesn’t improve over the next week then we will put her on life support and then I’m afraid only time will tell.” And with that she left the room.
“Dad.” I say huskily from the doorway.
“Oh sweetie, what’s going to happen now?”
I pull myself together unable to fully cry and show my dad I am here for him” Well, why don’t we start by asking someone what actually happened to her?”
“Ok.”
I found the nearest doctor and ask the question that was still clamping my chest together.
The doctor looks at his clipboard.
...
“Jane Jacobs, mmm, it says pulled from car wreck with 3 other people.”
“Who are those 3 other people?” I asked.
“Umm, Maureen Bailey, Ann Hale and Florence Glasson.”
“Oh, ok.” I replied. As he turned to walk away.
We spent the night with mum, talking and comforting her, wishing, hoping, praying that she would get better. But at 3:06, the heart rate monitor told us the grim truth, it played the death note, bbbbeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. Doctors and nurses came rushing in.
Dad stood up “Stop, just let her go.” Uncertainty in his voice.
The doctors and nurses nodded in sad approval and took out all the cords and turned the equipment off.
We sat beside her till 6:00 when nurses came to take her away and we were told to go home, both too distraught to object, we made the journey home.
I guess heaven needed one more angel.
