“Hey Charlie, have you noticed that ever since Hazel found out she was leaving, she has been all depressed and sad and she rarely sees me after school or on weekends?”

“You’d be sad and whatever to, wouldn’t you?”

“I guess, but you would think she would want to spend her last weeks with us being happy and stuff, right?”

“I don’t know, shell deal with it in her own way, but you know, her 16th birthday is coming why don’t you throw her a surprise party or something.”

“That’s a great idea, thanks Charlie!”

Hazel’s P.O.V

I feel terrible, I’ve been shutting everyone out especially Tyler and Charlie. I should be spending more time with them, instead im daydreaming through class and locking myself away at home. Why?

“Hazel, there’s a phone call for you.” My dad calls from the kitchen.

“Coming.” I moan.

Its late afternoon on a Friday, why would anyone be calling me?

“Hello.” I grumble.

“Hazel, is that you?”-I knew that voice straightaway, it was Tyler.

“Hey Tyler, I’m sooooo sorry, I’ve been ne.”

“Stop, don’t apologise, I can’t imagine what you are going through, so I totally forgive you, now why don’t you come over to my place?”

“Why.” I say smiling.

“So we can watch a movie or something, and ah don’t wear pjs or trackies, ok?”

“Oookaaay!” I say, just a little bit confused.

"Just do it please.” He said in a rather pleading tone.

“Ok, what time?”

“6:00.”

That gave me about 1 and ½ hours to get ready, so I jumped in the shower and washed my hair. When I was done and dry I rummage through my cupboard for something to wear and ended up finding my black crop top and khaki skater skirt, so I put them on, then I go through my shoes and pull out my khaki studded combat boots as well as my black across the shoulder bag with my phone, lip-gloss and money (for emergencies my dad says.) I go out and blow dry and straighten my hair, I spray 2 sprays of my favourite perfume. On my way out the door I kiss dad goodbye and head out.

It’s only a short walk to Tyler’s place, 2 blocks from mine on the 3rd floor of the apartment building.

I knocked on Tyler’s door, there was no answer, so my curiosity took over and I turned the door knob it was pitch black in there. I called out for Tyler, but no one answered and then I got the biggest shock of my life,

“SURPRISE!!!” was yelled at me.

The lights were flicked on and Charlie walked over to me showing a great big chocolate cake that said ‘Happy 16th Birthday Hazel’.

Here’s me standing in the middle of my own surprise party thinking, is it really my birthday? Is it really the 18th of July?

“So what do you think?” Tyler’s raspy voice asks me in the, middle of my thoughts.

“Ah, u, i, did.” I stutter.

“Surprised and speechless i see!” he laughs.

“Yeah!”I whisper.

He takes my hand and leads me to the kitchen where my dad was standing,

“Dad, how, but you, what? I stammer, pointing my finger in all different directions.
