“I heard you, just then, you know, talking to Charlie.”
“So you heard everything then.” I say sorrow lacing my words.
“Yeah, well, about you leaving anyway.”
“Oh yeah dads idea.”
“Well what do you want to do?” he asked gingerly.
“I don’t know, I mean, I love what I have here, but I can live my dream if I move, so.”
“You’re at crossroads?” he asked while sitting down on my bed and pulling me close so that i am leaning on his chest, all tucked up, with his arm around me.
“Yeah.” I whisper.
…
I started to go teary, but it was my sniff that gave it away.
“You crying?”He asks tenderly.
“No, cowgirls don’t cry.” I say sniffing again.
“Where’d you get that from?”
“It’s a song by a country music band I really like; do you know Brooks and Dunn?”
“No, sing a bit of it.”
“No way.”
“Come on. You can sing, even I can sing.” He laughs.
“I can’t sing, don’t be silly.” I giggle.
He starts tickling me stops suddenly, straddling me, I think he picked up on the fact I couldn’t breath
“Sing the chorus or something, for me.” He pleaded.
“Ok, hop off for a second and let me get my breath back and maybe I will sing.”
“Come on, I know you can sing.”
“How.”
“I just do.”
“You’re so weird.”
“Ha ha says you.”
“Oh.”
We both laugh.
“Sing the chorus already.” He said impatiently, with a grin on his face.
“Ok, here goes,
Cowgirls don’t cry, ride baby ride
Lessons of life are gonna show you in time
Soon enough your gonna know why
Its gonna hurt every now and then
But if you fall get back on again
Cowgirls don’t cry.
“Wow that was beautiful.” He moves in to kiss me.
But we were interrupted by Charlie standing under the doorframe, “were you just singing Hazel?”
“Yeah why?”
“Because that was amazing.”
“Thanks guys.” I say blushing. “My dad has always told me that cowgirls don’t cry so every time I’m going to cry or something, I just think of that, it’s kind of like, my inspiration, you know?”
