Chapter Ten:
I ran towards him, then caught myself. Disappointment flooded over me. 'He doesn't know you!' I yelled at myself.
River strolled confidently towards him, and as she passed me, she gave me a look.
My face was burning with embarrassment and anger. I held my hands behind me and scowled at my feet.
"What a lovely day!" The Doctor said in a way as if nothing was wrong. "I was just admiring the shops, and saw a lovely trench coat! I almost got it, but realized it was women's." He gave a chuckle.
He then turned towards me, looked at the coat I had wrapped protectively around me, then smiled warmly at me. He didn't ask for it back, nor was he hinting. It was almost as if he could read minds and knew how I didn't want to part with it.
"How was your trip?" He addressed River.
"Well, it was a very smooth trip. I noticed you left the brakes on, you KNOW how bad that is for the Tardis," She gave him a loving frown.
"Nah, she doesn't mind. She's a good girl. She get me where I need to go, and complains when something's wrong," The Doctor said with a wink.
I'm guessing the Tardis is a... Girl... And in fact DOES have feeling as guessed.
"Guess who left the Tardis door unlocked AND open?" River said shaking her head.
"Melanie! I thought I made it clear how much danger you are in after having contact with me!" I cringed. It wasnt a harsh tone, more concerned rather. But for some reason, knowing I let The Doctor down, crushed me. Without control, tears streamed down my face. 'Maybe it was from the contacts...' I thought hopefully rather than me just being my emotional self.
I shook my head very quickly, continuing to stare at my feet. My shoulders shook a little and my sniffing was quite obvious that I was crying.
The Doctor seemed awkward. And mad, (at himself), he cursed under his breath and walked over to me.
"No," He said in a comforting voice. "Please, don't cry. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be so harsh. I was just worried about you. I feared for your safety and was worried sick all day wondering if all had gone according to plan."
I continued to cry, and gave a, "Mmhmm."
He leaned towards me, paused, then pulled me into his arms, embracing me. Despite my crying, this was the most wonderful thing that had happened in a long time. His chest, hard, yet soft, his arms wrapped protectively around me, his chin rested on top of my head, and, most of all, his smell. It came down on me, making me head spin. It was like a drug. Then, he pulled away.
It was a very short hug, but it meant the world to me. I gave him a small smile, looking up through my eyelashes.
In the corner of my eye, I could see River staring. I grew red again. Thankfully, the Doctor was back on track.
"Okay, I think I know what has happened. I'm going to reexplain the situation, but in more detail. But first, I want a bite to eat."
I followed the Doctor like a lost puppy. River right at his side. Walking down the street, I noticed a quaint little flower shop. It was only a little bit ahead, so I quickened my pace to look at the beautiful flowers. Just the window alone held such pretty colors. I was intrigued to go in, but remembered we were here for a reason. A lone flower caught the corner of my eye. And orchid. So delicate. So pure. So beautiful.
I pulled my eyes away from the shop to find The Doctor observing me. I gave him another small smile. He returned it.
We walked over to a little shop that served fish 'n' chips. My stomach gave a loud growl. I hadn't eaten all day and didn't get to finish making my egg. The Doctor heard, and grinned at me.
"Time for you to have a decent meal. Poor thing, barely scraping by," The Doctor clicked his tongue.
I got red AGAIN. This was getting old.
"Oh no! No Doctor, I can manage." I couldn't, but I don't like the idea of mooching off other people.
"Don't be ridiculous. I'll pay." At that, he turned on his heals, and ordered.
River and I went to go sit down, waiting for our food, and The Doctor. He sat next to River, across from me. He was gazing out the window with that adorable frown of his. I was studying his face for a long time until I realized, he wasnt looking out the window anymore, but at me. I started and looked down, RED AGAIN. I twiddled my thumbs and became very interesting in my hands, avoiding The Doctor'a stare, which I could still feel on me.
A tray of steaming fish 'n' chips brought my back to life. My mouth flooded with saliva. Forgetting my manners, I dug in. There was so much more food than I had seen in a long time. Probably since I moved out of my grandparents. The had both died now. And I couldn't go home for.... Reasons.
As I was in the process of stuffing my face, I looked up, feeling eyes on me. River watching me, eyebrows raised, the corners of her mouth twitching. My eyes flicked over to The Doctor. He looked amused and pleased. And I also detected, was that sadness in his eyes?
After that, I slowed down, remembering I was supposed to be lady like. The Doctor plunged right into his explanation.
"I was on my way to visit the Queen of England, when my Tardis gave a shudder. She started whining. Then, the next thing I know, I'm crashed upside down. I pulled myself out with great difficulty, being the Tardis' state. Then, I met Melanie. I was about the introduce myself, when she beat me to it. She knew who I was. She showed me a TV series called, 'Doctor Who'. It was very unnerving because it was me. Everything I've done. Like, someone was filming me without me knowing it. It turns out, that's not the case. I came through a rip in a wormhole not knowing it, taking me to a different dimension. In THIS dimension, it is just a TV series. But, there is a problem. I was unconsciously being followed. They came through the wormhole as well. The other thing is, since I was in Melanie's apparent, out scents were all mixed up. They thought I was with her, and were following her. She was in danger, so I came to warn her, but they got me. Sending me back in time to the 1930's," The Doctor concluded with a matter of fact tone.
I was first to break the silence, "Who, Doctor? Who sent you back?"
"The Angels."
The Doctor sat, River gasped, and I stared, nonplused.
"What are... Angels?"
"Weeping Angels are alien creatures that take the form of statues. When you are looking at them, they are unable to move. But if you turn your back or blink, they move at a speed of lightning, and send you back in time. It doesn't sound that scary, but you die. Not from anything that they do, you just live in that time era, grow old, and die in the date and time you were first sent back in time."
Any normal person would feel scared, but I felt safe with The Doctor.
Once my bottomless pit was content, we sat up and left. I left a tip on the table, feeling like I contributed to the pay.
We walked back to the Tardis, when I saw a little girl wearing a gas mask waking towards me. I stopped and kneeled down to her level.
"Mummy?" She asked. "Are you my mummy?"
