Chapter 02.
Edited 1.11.2020In compliance with my mother's words, Draco sat back down at the island table. Analyzing each of their faces, I could tell that I wasn't going to be happy with what they had to say.
"What now?" I grumbled. At this point, I had little patience for the adults in my life.
"Mind your tone," my mother spat icily. "You'll be going school with Draco this fall."
As much as I hate to admit out, my interest was immediately piqued. Jeremiah and Megara both went to school Monday through Friday for a majority of the year, but I was told that it was only for muggles. And then the pieces started to connect. "You're sending me to high school here? So that's why my room is here; you're making me move in."
"Only for the rest of the summer," my mother soothed. "Come September you'll be attending Hogwarts, a boarding school for witches and wizards."
I opened then closed my mouth a couple times, stunned. My entire life I had been taught everything, magical and otherwise, at home by my parents, and this was the first I was ever hearing about a school for magic. Why didn't they tell me a place like that existed? Betrayal crept up into my chest, I could've been going to school with people like us this whole time?!
I clicked my tongue against my teeth irritably. "Am I allowed to ask why this happening or am I restricted from the knowledge?"
"For once, you can ask why. Once the two of you join us in the ranks, you'll be given a task to prove your worth, and it will only be possible if you're at Hogwarts," my father explained, eyes clearly warning me to tread lightly.
Even though my heart thumped nervously in my chest, I rolled my eyes. "How original."
"Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster, and he's become quite a nuisance for the Dark Lord. He wants something done about it," my mother continued on for him as if I hadn't spoken at all.
It took me all of two seconds to realize what they were getting at. Murder. I shot up from my seat so quickly that he chair fell to the floor, "You want me-- you want us to..." I trailed off unable to bring myself to say it out loud.
"Yes," she answered simply like we were discussing the weather, "The two of you are tasked with killing him."
I didn't know much about this man Albus Dumbledore, but what I did know about him was that he was a great and powerful wizard; in turn, one of the greatest threats to the Dark Lord. So why would he send us to kill him? As two, clearly, inexperienced teenagers, we were sure to be caught or killed. Not even to mention that we would be ending a person's life. I felt a little woozy all of a sudden. The only one in the room that seemed to have a negative reaction besides myself, was Narcissa; her skin was paler than usual and guilt was written all over face.
The wheels in my head turned faster, trying to comprehend. The only way to kill the headmaster would be to infiltrate the school, but we would have to be bound by the Dark Mark before he let us loose. But still, why us? Why Draco and I?
Something else occurred to me; as it was almost August right now, if I was going to Hogwarts, I wouldn't be able to see Jeremiah and Megara before I was shipped off.
The words came tumbling out before I could stop them, "What about Meg and Miah?"
Her nostrils flared, "The muggle twins? As far as I'm concerned, they don't even exist."
"Mom--"
"Forget them," she interrupted calmly. "Or we'll be forced to erase their memories; don't think that I don't know what you've told them." My jaw clenched reflexively, but I stayed quiet. All this time, I thought I had been clever and sneaky with how I handled the twins. She never said anything because she wanted to use them against me at the right time, which was right now. Megara and Jeremiah meant the world to me, but she always dismissed it as an odd obsession with muggles. Now she was using their memories to bribe me, and it was working.
