Chapter I

How do you confront someone you thought was your mom your whole life, and then find out she isn’t? I don’t know either. I ponder this as I walk into the living room. My ‘mom’ stood there in her favorite baby blue dress that flowed around her slim waist. She looked up as I came in. Her dark brown eyes connected with my silver blues. You could tell something was up from the way my hands fidgeted with the small piece of paper, the paper that had changed my life. I sat across from her. My shoulders tense.

“Mom, I need your help figuring something out, Okay? And I need you to be completely honest with me. Can you do that?” It surprised me how steady my voice came out.

She tensed and smiled. “Of course I will sweetie. What is it?”

As I handed her the paper, I searched her face as she read it. Her eyebrows furrowed, and shoulders tensed. She read it several times before she finally looked up, her eyes filled with fear, disbelief, and a little anger. Her hands had begun to shake.

“What is this?” Her voice shook as she cast her eyes back to the paper.

“You tell me.” I stared at her. “I found it in my backpack. Tell me the truth. Who am I? Who were my real parents, and how did you end up with me?”

She looked down, tears forming in her eyes, and sighed. “You were only a baby when we found you. You were on the porch in a basket, wrapped up nice and tight, sound asleep. I don’t know who left you there, or why, but it seemed like a miracle to us. The only thing I know is they left a suitcase with you.”

She abruptly got up and left. A few moments later she reappeared holding a solid black, felt suitcase. It was small, but somehow it seemed as though it was calling me. I gently grabbed it. As soon as the soft object connected with my fingers, a terrible shocking pain coursed through my body, causing me to let out an ear piercing scream that broke the windows. My eyes closed as I fell.

I felt as if I was spinning. My head felt fuzzy and disconnected, as my body touched the ground. I slowly opened my eyes and gasped. I was so not in Texas anymore. The Sapphire blue trees gleamed underneath two different suns. I put a hand above my eyes as I tried to look around. The grass underneath me was a soft, pale gold. I ran my hands through it, admiring the silky texture.

The sound of fast approaching footsteps had me looking up. My eyes met theirs and I gasped. It was like I was looking in a mirror. The same stunning silver eyes, narrow build, and, though hers was slightly aged more than mine, the exact same face. I knew instantly who this woman was. I stood abruptly. All of the blood washed out of my face as anger took hold. She froze at the cold look I gave her. “I presume you are my Mother?”

She was like a deer caught in headlights. She didn’t move a muscle, and if you didn’t look close, you could swear that she wasn’t breathing. I stepped closer and, she closed her eyes. She sighed, and then opened them. She blinked several times before a look of genuine joy and happiness over came her face. She ran and, enveloped me in a giant hug. I just stood there. My body was so tense I could feel the muscles burning. She let go when realized that I wasn’t hugging back. She spoke first.

“Oh my, I can’t believe you found your way back to us!” Tears were rolling down her cheeks.

“Found my way back?” I raised my eyebrows as I asked her this. My hands clenched so tight that my nails were starting to cut into my palms.

She nodded her head. “Yes dear. This is your twenty-first birthday. Most of us don’t find our way back in time.” At my look of confusion she shook her head. “You never looked in the case did you?”
