Chapter IV
I flew along the current for a while. Letting the breeze take me where it wanted to. I let my thoughts drift. As I grew tired I found a small clearing near a little town. I landed and stood still, listening to the sounds around me. Once I was satisfied that I was safe, I curled up and drifted to sleep.
I awoke to a cold breeze drifting across my body. I hugged my arms tighter to me. All of a sudden I jerked upright looking down. Arms? That would explain the cold breeze. I was sitting completely naked in the middle of the clearing. That's a first. I'd never shifted in my sleep before.
I stood looking around. Remembering the small town I had seen as I landed, I headed toward it. I kept well inside the tree line. Constantly stopping and listening to make sure I hadn't been spotted.
I quickly came upon a house. There was a cloths line hanging in the back. I checked around then dashed toward it. Luckily who's ever these cloths belonged to were about the same size as me. I grabbed a pair of pants and a shirt. After quickly putting them on I went into the town.
No one even looked at me as I walked through. It was as though a strange young woman walking through town barefoot was nothing new to them.
Out of nowhere a girl was walking beside me. "So? Do you like my cloths?" I looked down and away, my face tomato red. "I'm sorry." She chuckled. "Girl, your fine. I understand the feeling. Trust me. We shifters have to stick together."
I stopped dead in my tracks and looked at her. She was beautiful. She had long straight black hair and bright green eyes. Her olive toned skin seemed to shimmer in the sunlight.
"How?" Was all I asked. I knew I didn't need to say more.
She smiled and pointed to her nose. I sniffed the air, and immediately knew what she meant. I could smell her. She was a were-cheetah. She held out her hand to me. "I'm Raine, but most people just call me Ri." I smiled back and shook her hand. "I'm Arianne."
We started walking again. "So what kind of shifter are you?" I stiffened. "I'm not sure." I figured she'd be like all of the other shifters I've met and laugh at that, but she didn't. She just grabbed my hand and pulled me into the forest that surrounded the town.
"Show me." I sighed and stripped off the clothes, not wanting to rip them since they didn't belong to me. "This might take a minute. I went to my place of peace in my mind and zoned out. I felt the change start and evened my breathing. Within what felt like moments I opened my eyes and looked at Ri.
Her mouth was hanging open. "Oh my God!" She slowly came over to me. "You're the most beautiful creature I have ever seen." She reached out a hand and laid it on my side near the base of my left wing. I looked around noticing that nothing had seemed to change while I shifted.
I looked over at Ri. *How long did it take me to shift?* She jumped when I spoke into her mind. "But? How?" I tilted my head. *I don't know. I've been able to do it since my first shift.* She stared at me in awe.
Then it registered that I had asked a question. "Oh. It took you about half an hour." I stared at her in disbelief. "What?" She asked, confused. *The fastest I have ever shifted took me half a day.* I thought for a moment. *This must have to do with Him.* Her confusion deepened. "Who?" I sighed. *My mate...* She raised an eyebrow. "Your mate?" I nodded. "Well, if you have a mate why aren't you with him?" I sighed again.
I sat down as I explained my life story to her. It took a good twenty minutes. By the time I had finished she was sitting beside me, thinking. "Blake Trendon, Huh? Wow. And you've vowed to kill his older brother. Damn, that sucks. And I thought I had a strange childhood."
I stood and stretched. She looked at me. "And you've been doing this on your own for years. It definitely explains why your shifting would be getting faster. I have just one question for you now. Would you like me to help you learn how to control the shift better?" Excitement shot through me, and I nodded my head vigorously. She jumped up and clapped her hands together. "Well then. Lets get started!"
