Chapter III

I know you are wondering what I just turned into. I made my way out of the clearing to a nearby stream. I looked down and took in my form. It still filled me with awe every time I saw my sleek black fur with even darker midnight spots and, my glowing silver eyes. As I sat there a strange chill worked its way up my back making me jostle my wings. Yes, I said wings. I was in the form of a black leopard with a fourteen foot wing span of black wings with silver tips.

I stopped staring and listened. My ear twitched to my left. My head snapped in that direction as I heard a twig snap and footsteps. I crouched down low and folded my wings flat to my back. Fear coursed through me but I fought it down. After a moment a person stepped out of the brush about ten yards from me.

I couldn’t suppress a growl as I recognized them. Emerald eyes connected with mercury and the world stood still for several moments. At least that is what it felt like. My breath caught as his eyes widened and he recognized me.

“Arianne?” His whole posture changed. He bent down on one knee bringing him to eye level. “Is that you?” He looked different now than before. He wasn’t as menacing.

I gave a short nod. His eyes widened in disbelief. I knew that he could see my face and eyes, but I didn’t think he had noticed my wings yet since the sun had already set. And yes it took me most of the day to shift. Not all of us are Were-creatures. I decided that if he hadn’t noticed them I wasn’t going to draw attention to them. Surprise getaway might be needed.

He slowly stood, as if he was trying not to startle a feral animal, and took a step forward. “It’s impossible. You are my kind, different side of the tracks but still my kind. I could smell you. But now I can’t? How? What?” With each word he took a painfully slow step. Once he was about five yards away I let out a quiet warning growl and he stopped.

“Can you talk in this form?” I cocked my head to the side at his question, unsure how to respond. I mean I could talk in this form but not in the normal way, but there was no way I wanted to talk in this guy’s mind. He looked thoughtful for a moment before I felt a small prodding against my barriers. Kind of like someone knocking on a door.

Something inside me shivered in a good way that freaked me out. I let a small crack form in my barrier, just enough to communicate through but not enough to get inside.

*You figured it out.* It was a small statement, but he froze. Then a smile formed on his face. “How?” I shook my head, my fur rustling slightly. He bent down again and studied me. That was when the wind picked up and he noticed my wings.

“What on earth?” That was all he said before he caught me off guard by appearing beside me with one hand on my wings. The sensation was unbelievable. It felt like a thousand sparks had congregated in the one spot where there was contact and my body let out an unwilling purr.

I jumped away from him so quick his head spun around as he tried to find me. His eyes came to a stop as he saw me perched in a tree above his head. He stared at me then down to his hand and back again. There was no way this was possible.

We stared at each other for a few moments before he spoke. “It can’t be?” I knew he had meant it as a statement but, it had come out as a question. That puzzled me.

*Apparently it can.* I snorted. His head shot up as I spoke in his mind. “What are you Arianne Dagan?” I shrugged. Well I shrugged as best I could, considering I was a two hundred pound cat. *I’m still not entirely sure myself Blake.* Again he shivered when I said his name. It looked almost involuntary. I lightly jumped out of the tree and landed next to him.

*You are lucky I am a girl that gives second chances, considering I promised the next time that I saw you I would tear off your head.* He had jumped slightly when I had landed next to him. Now he just stared again.

All of a sudden I saw a change in his eyes and body language, as it became possessive and dominate. “You are my soul mate.” It was a simple statement but when said aloud like that it took a whole new meaning. *I know.* with that I jumped in the air, let a draft catch my wings and, was gone.

There is nothing in the world quite like flying. To feel the breeze running its fingers through your feathers, and have a complete sense of freedom. I lazily glided on an updraft for a while pondering the situation.

So Blake was my soul mate. It was a depressing situation. I mean of course every girl wants her prince charming, but it sucked that mine was my sworn enemy. But it wasn’t him directly that I had the problem with. So that was a plus. It was just his older brother. Ugh, why do things have to be so complicated?
