Chapter II
I turned over as I woke up. Too late did I notice I was at the edge of the bed, and I hit the floor in a heap of sheets? I groaned and slowly began untangling myself. It had been a few years since I had dreamed of my past, especially of my mother’s death. I stood and groggily made my way over to the bathroom of the motel room I was in. You would think that after my mother told me to run I would have gone back and stayed with my biological mother, and I did go back, but only to find out why the hell ‘Our kind’s’ scent was all over my mother’s body. When I forced her to explain all she had said was, this was why after we came to ‘Our’ world we didn’t leave. The monster’s monitored us. They knew where we were after we made fist contact with this land.
I had been so pissed. It was my fault my mother had died? I made Diana tell me exactly what these ‘Monsters’ were, and where I could get my revenge. She had been unwilling to tell me until I used a little persuasion. And no I don’t mean I physically hurt her. One of my gifts was the ability to persuade anyone to do what I wanted. It was a talent I rarely used because I strongly believed in free will. But that day was an exception.
She told me about these creatures and where I could find them. They lived in the mortal world for the most part. But a few, the older and more powerful ones had residences in this world as well. And that was how I ended up in this motel three years later.
And yes, to those of you who are curious about it, I did eventually look in the damned suit case. At first there wasn’t anything, and then I realized there was glamour on it. After I had gotten past it there was a small book. I opened it and all of a sudden I knew where to go to find my mother’s killer. I still don’t know what that book was or, how it did that, but I wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
I finished up in the bathroom and walked over to the bed. The suitcase sat atop it. When I opened it there was a fresh set of cloths and some money waiting inside. Oh, did I mention that the suitcase itself was magical. All I had to do was touch it with the thought of what I wanted and it would be waiting inside. I know cool but kind of creepy right? But it had to be material objects like clothes, food, or money, nothing living.
I put on a dark green tank and some skinny jeans. Then I pulled on my boots and made sure my knives were in their places on my hips and ankles. I put my short swords on my back, and then topped it off with a short black trench coat that stopped just at the bottom of my butt. I swept my long auburn hair in to a ponytail.
By the time I was done the suitcase had already disappeared again. I swear that thing had a mind of its own. I headed out of the room out into the fresh air of dawn. I stretched and made my way to a diner down the street. I ordered a large cup of their strongest coffee and made sure there was some creamer and sugar. The way I looked at it I like to have a little coffee with my sugar. As I was finishing my coma in a cup I heard the ding of the bell on the door. The scent that hit me made my whole body freeze.
I heard the steps stop abruptly then turn in my direction. I was tense but pretended not to notice them as they stopped beside me. I sipped on my coffee as they sat down in front of me.
My breath caught at how beautiful he was. And normally I don’t use beautiful to describe how a man looks but, there was no other word for it. His cropped brown hair ended just at his strong jaw. His shoulders were wide and he was muscular but in a lean way. His skin was an unusual mixture of gold and bronze. And last but not least his glowing emerald eyes pierced mine.
“May I help you?” I asked him in an indifferent tone that seemed to catch him off guard. I guess he wasn’t used to women not swooning over him.
He cocked his head to the side, and just sat there for a moment. I thought he either hadn’t heard me or just wasn’t going to answer. I was about to say something else, when he spoke.
“Who are you?” It was my turn to be caught off guard this time. I raised an eyebrow at him. “Excuse me?” He smiled and I felt something trying to touch my mind. I slammed up walls around it and he jerked back.
“Just as I thought, now I will ask again who you are.” He cocked his head to the side again. I shrugged. “I am nobody.” His eyes turned to ice. “You’re such a pretty little lair.” His voice was low and venomous as he reached forward and twirled a lock of my hair. A cold shiver raced down my spine as I slapped his hand away.
“And who are you?” I asked him in an icy tone. He grinned. “I am Blake Trendon.” The last name sounded extremely familiar. “What do you want Blake?” He shivered when I said his name as if he liked it, and it made my stomach curl.
He smiled again. Man this guy sure likes to smile for no reason. “I want you, Miss Dagan.” My eyes went wide with shock as he spoke my last name. “Yes I know who you are. You’ve been killing my kind for three years now. How much of a Prince would I be if I didn’t?”
My breath caught in my throat. He was a prince? Then the named clicked into place. I stood abruptly. After slamming some money on the table for the coffee I turned on my heel and stormed out of the diner. It was still early morning and not very many people were out. Blake followed closely behind me as I made my way down the street to the edges of town where the forest was.
I flipped around quick as lightning with my short swords in my hands. He just stood there leaning against a tree, looking as if he didn’t have a care in the world, which he probably didn’t. I knew it was a ploy to anger me so I took a deep breath to keep calm.
“What do you want from me?” I glared at him. He stood straight. A long sword appeared in his hand. “I want blood, for all those you have slain.”
I laughed at him. Literally, I stood there laughing. He raised an eyebrow. “What is funny?” I just shook my head. “And what about the blood you have shed. And the blood those of your kind have shed? What about that?”
He looked genuinely confused for a moment. “What do you mean? We do not kill our own kind.” I just shook my head having heard this before. “No, you just kill humans and any other beings you feel like.”
He stared at me. “So?” That right there pissed me off to no end. “So? That’s all you have to say is, so? They are living creatures! What gives you the right to kill them? What have they done wrong? What in hell’s name is wrong with you!”
He lunged at me then. “They are weaker beings. It doesn’t matter who, what, or why? That’s just how it is!” I blocked him and shoved him back. “Weaker beings are meant to be protected not killed! Now you know why I kill your kind!”
That stopped him dead in his tracks. “So that’s why, because we kill lesser beings?”
I nodded stepping away from him. “Yes, and one of those beings happened to be the woman that raised and loved me.” I shook my head at his confused expression. “I don’t expect you to understand, and this will be your only warning. I will not stop until you do. The next time I meet you I will cut off your head.”
And with that I spun around and ran as fast as I could, which was pretty damned fast. I had yet to find any creature who could keep up with me. I kept running until my lungs felt as if they would burst from my chest.
I finally collapsed in a small clearing. Spot clouded my vision as oxygen returned to my lungs. I took a quick assessment of where I was, and every noise that I heard. It didn’t sound like there was any pursuit.
I stayed like that for a while. Until I was sure no one else was around. Then I made use of one of my other talents. I closed my eyes and felt a complete calm come over my body. My bones started to shift with loud cracks and breaks. You would think this would be excruciating, and believe me the first few times were, but that was why I had made my body completely relax. Of course it still hurt, but it was bearable.
As the last bone snapped into place, I stood and stretched.
