Chapter Eight – Life Fucking Loves Me
My last two subjects were English and French – oh the joys. After enduring them, I headed out to meet Tessa and was about to get inside the car when something caught my eye.
Kade was walking out from campus, but he wasn't alone. He had his arm over that girl's shoulder – Abigail Watts. I instantly felt like I'd been punched. My heart dropped out of my chest and into a sea of misery.
I watched them for a moment longer, how he leant in and pressed his lips to her temple as they walked past a group of boys, trying to swallow the lump in my throat as he burst into laughter at something she'd said. Were they...together?
I looked away before I could think about it anymore.
Tessa finally appeared, along with Ciara and Chloe. She pulled out of the parking lot and then hit the road. I gazed out the window; depressed.
"So," Tessa began, turning the music down and prodding me in the arm. "What'd he get you?"
"Do we have to talk about Kade?" I sighed, feeling even lower just by saying his name.
"Try living with him," I heard Ciara say.
"Oh no, what's happened? Shit, he didn't get you something shit, did he?" she asked, sounding worried.
"No," I muttered moodily, glaring out the window. Now that she mentioned it I wished he'd just gotten me something shit. I felt shit. Kade was a piece of shit.
"Well...then what did he get you?"
"A stupid bracelet, ok? Jesus why does it matter so much?" I snapped.
The car fell silent.
"He's clearly pissed you off since then," Ciara said. "What'd he do this time? Make out with someone in front of you, or something?"
I whipped round and glared at her. My glare faltered. "He wouldn't actually do that, would he?"
She rolled her blue eyes.
Chloe piped in. "Is it something to do with another girl?"
My quietness answered her question.
"Well then you should make him jealous," she concluded. "There's a party this weekend and Jack is gonna be there. You need to take his face and kiss the shit out of him directly in front of Kade, do you hear me? If Kade gets angry, then he's jealous and that means he's interested. If he doesn't, well...you know."
I sat back in my seat. "As much as I like the idea of that, I've been grounded. I'm not allowed to go to another party for two months."
Ciara couldn't suppress her laughter.
"Just sneak out. It's at the same house as last time," Tessa said.
I gave her a flat look. "How about no."
"Your parents work late though, don't they? They didn't get in till like three last time," she said pointedly.
I pulled a face. "But they'd know if I was gone. They just would."
