Chapter Nine – A Breath of Fresh Air

I cried when I got home. Then I was alright. And then I cried some more.

Mum was quick to realise I was distressed and asked me what was wrong after bringing me up a hot chocolate, but I told her I didn't want to talk about it. She had probably sussed it was to do with Kade though. It was written all over my face.

Well, really, it just was Kade. The one time I'd actually believed someone found me beautiful and they'd been lying. He'd lied straight to my face, kissed me, bought me a beautiful piece of jewellery and made it out like he cared for me. Jerk didn't cover it.

Tessa called me at ten the next morning as I was getting dressed to go out with Jack. I was exhausted from crying myself to sleep last night and I was sure she detected the weariness in my voice.

"Has Kade spoken to you at all?" she asked, sounding fearful.

I rolled my eyes. No doubt there was something else he was hiding from me. "No, not all week. Why?"

I pulled my hair up with a black scrunchie and then sighed, scanning myself in the mirror. I was wearing that dark blue blouse I'd bought last week and some jeans. I actually looked both smart and pleasing, if you ignored the dark rings under my eyes and their redness.

"He hasn't told you, has he?"

I didn't say anything.

She seemed to sigh and it shook. "He...well...Scarlet he's been sleeping with Abigail for the past two weeks. That's pretty long for someone like Kade."

She said it so quickly I might not have heard her had not I been expecting exactly what she was going to say. A huge lump rose in my throat.

"I know," was all I said. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted the black box on my chest of drawers containing his gift.

"Wait, you knew? How?"

"I saw them together."

"Oh...that's horrible. Are you ok?"

"Fantastic."

"Scarlet, I'm so sorry..."

"It's not your fault. Plus, I'm seeing Jack today. I'll be fine. Kade's just one boy, right? One stupid, insensitive boy," I said brightly, feeling like I was only twisting the knife in deeper.

She sighed again. "He's a cunt. I want to scream in his face right now for doing this to you. No one knew they were together until last night. He hasn't told her he got you a present. He's a deceiving dickhead."

"Nice alliteration," I said pathetically and then exhaled, closing my eyes. "There's no point in fighting it. He was never interested in me in the first place. I've theorised that it was all some big joke, but I'm not going to get upset about it anymore. I have a life and I'm going to live it. I'm going to this damn party tonight with Jack and who knows? Maybe something will happen."

"Scarlet, don't do something reckless just because you're hurt," she warned. "But I do agree. Be with Jack as much as you can tonight and I'll keep an eye out for Kade's reactions, ok? I'll report back and everything."
