Chapter 1
I walked into school a little nervous. Everyone was so much bigger and I felt like an ant stuck in the middle of a field. There were butterflies in my stomach and I'd almost forgot where to go. I held onto the straps on my backpack and swallowed hard. I walked forward.
“Watch it, kid” said a stubborn 8th grader.
I stepped back and looked to my left. A school of pimpled faced, sweaty, fish heads. I glanced to my right. I saw a bunch of nurses. ‘Maybe I can fake being sick…’ I thought to myself. I was about to walk in when a fat old woman with lunch lady arms came out with a bucket of barf in her hands. “I’ll be back to take care of ya.”
Wide-eyed I said “No, I’m fine”
She smirked, “Suit yourself.” As she walked out of the office a young boy walked behind her. I made an uneasy face as he threw up into the garbage in front of him.
Holding my mouth I found my way through the crowd into a large carpeted area. Fumbling with my hands I picked out a piece of paper with my locker number on it. “twenty…” I said under my breath, “eight.” I smiled. Saying it out loud made me feel so much better. I looked to my right. I scanned the locker. As my head came up, I saw the number “41” written on it. I looked at the one to the left of it. “40.” I followed the line of lockers until I reached 28. I looked at the piece of paper and read my combo in my head. ’18-34-24.’ “Sounds easy enough…” I mumbled. I read the directions and cleared my locker and stopped on 18. I looked down and read the directions again. I turned to the right and went past 18 again and stopped on 34. I read for the final time “Turn to the left and stop on 24.” I did as it said and stopped on 24. Nothing happened. I hoped it would pop open automatic or I’d atleast here a click. I slammed my head on my locker and took my backpack off. As I sat down against my locker I heard a voice.
“Locker trouble?” asked my best friend, Kaitlyn. “Kaitlyn!” I screamed and got up to hug her. “How you doin’, Maddy?” she asked. “Fine, fine,” I said looking at my locker, “Can you help me?”
“Oh sure,” she said, approaching my locker. “You have to turn it slightly more and then it clicks and you pull the handle.” I watched as she twisted her hand and how it stopped at 20. “You do the honors.” She said, motioning towards the handle.
I grabbed it tight and lifted. My eyes widened again and my mouth dropped. “Oh… my…” “God” I finished for Kaitlyn. I stepped back in disgust. “Isn’t gum banned?” I almost screamed. “Yeah,” said a boy behind me, “Everybody knows that.”
“Well she just got here smart-arse.” Said Kaitlyn. The boy made a mouth with his fingers and made it “talk” like crazy. She stuck her tongue out.
We turned around and faced my locker. “Well its only on the sides. I’m sure you can manage.”
As I through my backpack in my locker, she helped me unpack and I sorted it out. Just as my locker looked perfect, the bell rang. We both clenched our teeth. “Please tell me you have Mr. Meyer.” She said. I frowned “No… I have Mrs. Decker.”
We sighed. “Well atleast all the homebase classes are right next to each other.” “Yeah.” I sighed again.
We walked into the hallway and checked each room for the name on the board. We finally neared the end of the hallway and we each looked in the 2 classes across from each other. “Mrs. Decker” I mumbled. “Mr. Meyer," she said right after me. We ran towards each other and hugged. “Bye, I’ll miss you.” She said. “I’ll miss you, too.” As the bell rang saying that it was time for class to start, we let go. We walked into our classrooms and we waved through the windows. We both went and sat down for class. “Please take your seats!” yelled Mrs. Decker.
