"Dave, is there any chance I can not go?" I said, eagerly waiting for yes as an answer. Dave took a moment to respond, as if he was confused, "Well you don't need to go if you don't want to." I opened my mouth to thank Dave, but then Alvin chimed in, "Simon, there's no way you can miss this! All the popular kids will be there! And think of it this way Simon, at least you might have a chance at being popular!" A silence went through the room. Noticing what he just said... And Dave's disapproving look, he tried correcting himself, "I mean not that your not already popular or anything but..." "Save it Alvin," I interrupted, "I get it..." I said with a sigh. "Alvin, you apologize to Simon right now." "It's ok Dave, I'll be in my room if you need me." I said as I went up the stairs hearing a high pitched, "Really Alvin?" and another voice saying, "What?! He said it was ok!" behind me.
As I walked into my room, I looked into my mirror and adjusted my bow tie. This really isn't for me... I mean prom is for the cool kids and Alvin was right, I'm just that smart guy that everyone ignores... Suddenly I heard someone yell my name, "Simon!" I turned around to see that it was my annoying brother Alvin, "what do you want, Alvin?" "I just wanted to say sorry, I mean you are a rock star after all so you are somewhat popular." "No, no, Alvin. You were right. At school, I'm one of the least popular kids there." "But..." "No. I know you just want to make me feel better but it's not working." Sigh. "I just don't think prom is for me." I was hoping Alvin would stop, but as usual, he did no such thing and was trying his best at being persuasive. "Simon, I really think you should go. I mean, you'll have a great time and I know it." I responded quickly and determined to prove him wrong. "Alvin, I don't have many friends and you will be talking to everyone there besides me so what's the point?" "Simon. Believe me. The great Alvinie might know nothing, but I know you'll have a great time. Trust me." I looked up at his eager face and reluctantly replied, "Fine, if you say so..." Immediately, Alvin burst out loud saying, "Yay! Problem solved yet again! Now come on Simon! We're gonna be late!" he said as he was walking out the door. "I'll be down there in a minute." I turned to the mirror. To be honest, not having friends to hang out with there wasn't my only concern. Alvin was a girl magnet, and I wasn't. This is hopeless. I wouldn't mind not having a date either but then again there's... Her... But she would never like me back...
