Chapter 19
VALMONT
Life in a battlefield was not easy.
Here people fought for their own survival.
That was my first experience in a war and I can confirm that war is hell. Here people fell down completely lifeless. They did not even have an opportunity to see their families again or tell them a last farewell.
That happened every day in war. On our horses we saw a great number of men being killed by enemies. Half of our troops had been destroyed. So many dead bodies were put into the earth. We did it to honor them because they were big heroes in battle, examples for all of us.
It was night. We were in our camp, in our tents.
As usual, my thoughts were on Aphrodite. I missed her so much. I had to remind myself it was just a matter of time and soon we would be together. We would marry each other and everything would come back to normal. I smiled into a bottle of wine as I thought of her. I imagined in this moment she was thinking of me as well as she would be lying in her bed.
With her absence I realized I loved her even more than I had thought.
Our love was becoming stronger and was indestructible.
Aphrodite was a part of me and I a part of her; two parts forming only one.
The next day we returned to the battlefield and it all started again. The difference was that more men were dead and other men appeared to defend their countries.
But during the war we saw only blood, blood and blood − death, death and death.
Maybe that was the spirit of the war. 'Rack and ruin'
