Okay. This is going to be hard. I've never told anybody who wasn't there what happened in the great hall inside the Erudite compound. Robert was there - I'm still not even sure why. He was an Amity, and they hated war. Anyway, that's irrelavent. He'd fired a shot, probably aimed for my heart but being Amity he had missed and hit my arm instead. I'd blacked out for a long time, and woken again with Christina, Uriah and Tobias leaning over me, eyes desperate. "T-Tobias," I'd spluttered, choking on my own breath. He had sat me up, patting on back just incase I had been choking. "Who?" He'd said, looking at me with pleading eyes, eyes that said Tris, stop. Please, stop. "Willow, it's me, Jonah. Have you been having nightmares again?" He had stroked my cheek and winked at me, instantly reminding me that we were in the presence of many Erudites. A few moments later, an old Erudite lady had stood up, shaking as if there was an earthquake under only her. She kept shaking her head, lifting a quivering hand to point at me and Tobias. "No," She had croaked, staggering backwards as if we were holding a gun to her head. "No, it can't be, it musn't be, they couldn't." Eyes were swivelling everywhere - towardsus, towards her, even towards Robert who was leaning casually against a marble pillar. "First the Amity boy, he called her 'Beatrice' as in Beatrice Prior. Am I not right?" She had said, getting no protests. I was leaning into Tobias, feeling faint. "And she called him-" she said, pointing at Tobias. "-Tobias. He's Tobias Eaton. Son of an Abnegation leader. And the others are obviously-"

"-Spies," Robert had continued for her. He had stalked up through the crowd, seemingly unnoticed. "I believe their names are Christina and Uriah. Two of the most treasured Dauntless who are still faithful to their faction. Still defending their right to be free, I suppose. I'm guessing you want to know why I am here though?" He had smirked, and then looked about the Erudite people who all nodded in perfect syncrony. "Their little 'raid' has been in planning for days now. Though these people were foolish, and let a certain boy record all their plans on a document. Peter sent those files to us," He had said, laughing. I felt Tobias slip his hand onto his gun, and felt for my own. Yet my hand had never actually reached my gun, because I had frozen at the sight of woman in a long, flowing white dress. "Guys," I had stuttered, looking not at them, but still at the woman whose mouth was now making shapes meant to be words. Beatrice the woman was mouthing. Beatrice, come here. It's me, so come here. They all followed my gaze, and Christina had grabbed hold of my arm. "Tris," she said, turning my head so I would look at her, but my focus was still on the lady. "Tris, I thought you said your mom died." She looked at me as my eyes filled with tears. "I thought she was dead," I had said, getting up. I had expected Tobias to get up and stand with me, but when I turned and looked at him his face was as white as a sheet. At first I didn't know why. Then I followed his gaze to where my mother stood. Except now, not only my mother stood there. Evelyn Johnson, Tobais' mom now stood there too. And they were both holding fully loading guns. The next time my mother spoke, in exact precision with the moment Evelyn spoke, words came out. "We are sorry," they said. Their voices had not been as they used to be, but were instead almost robotic. Deep down somewhere, I knew they weren't real. I knew Evelyn was alive, and she was living with the Factionless. Just as the two guns fired at the same time, a boy leapt in front of us, two bullets hitting him in the leg and arm. I turned over the crumpled boy, and found the person I was least likely to see bleeding on the floor. Caleb.
