I lay in the infirmary, tubes coming out of every possible part of my body. But instead of the buzz of doctors, nurses and worried visitors, I heard nothing but silence. Not since the accident. Awful, sickening silence.

Ah, yes. The ‘accident’. Not much of an accident, to be honest. But that’s what he’s been telling the temporary Dauntless leaders. “I was teaching her how to throw knives…but one slipped.” He’d try and see if that one would fool them. They weren’t that smart, after all. “I was practicing, and I didn’t know she’d walked in.” Hmm, a possibility. “She attacked me first!” Far-fetched, but it might work.

The funny thing is, we weren’t even in the training room, so he had no excuse at all for having a knife. But of course the devious little…language, Christina…thing, dragged me into the training room, cleaned the trail of blood and left me for dead. The only reason they caught him was because when I came to, I muttered ‘Xav. Xavier did this,” in a croaky, pathetic voice. Apparently all that happened, anyway. I don’t remember a thing.

He wanted me to die. He told me he loved me, but he tried to kill me. Yeah, legit logic there, Xavier. He’s never loved anyone. Anything.

I remember once Xavier told me something that his great-great-great grandfather had said in the days where this world was so different.  According to him, and I have absolutely no reason to believe that all this is even remotely true, in those days, creatures roamed the earth. Terrible, terrible creatures. Vampires. But as far as I knew, vampires didn’t exist right? They were a figure of simple human imagination. Apparently, there were worse creatures. Werewolves, warlocks, witches, faeries.  And his great-great-great grandfather had walked amongst them, slayed them, and he had been part of a long succession of half angel, half human creatures. They called themselves the ‘Shadowhunters’. But there had been something different about Xav’s great-great-great grandfather. He had been infused with demon blood before he was born, turning him incurably evil. And now, that world had died out, faded away forever until only humans, and humans alone existed.

They called him Jonathan Christopher ‘Sebastian’ Morgenstern.
