I stepped into the public library for the first time in my adult life. It goes without saying that rock stars don't generally spend time surrounded by novels and bookworms, but today was an exception. I was on a mission, and if it meant stepping out of my comfort zone and into new territory well, that's what I was gonna' have to do.
I passed through the glass doors and headed towards the desk that was positioned right in the center of the lobby. A robust old woman with horn rimmed glasses and long, polished nails was clicking away at her keyboard as I approached her. As soon as she saw me, her typing stopped and her mouth curled into a frown.
"Excuse me, miss," I began awkwardly, my voice sounded ten times louder in the tranquil environment of the library. I was sure my words might have started an avalanche of books somewhere in the upstairs aisles. "I'm looking for sign up sheets for an American Sign Language class."
She didn't seem convinced, but wordlessly pulled out a brochure from a nearby desk drawer. She handed it to me before returning to her computer. Rude.
I ignored her snobby attitude and instead began reading the brochure. It was a month long class-a little too long for what I had been hoping for-but it was fairly cheap and would get the job done. As much as I didn't want to make Melody wait that long, I knew that I didn't really have a choice.
If I could take this class and prove Mrs. Swanson wrong, the month long wait would be worth it. I wanted to show Melody that I was willing to learn. I wanted to connect with her and show her that I cared enough about her to learn a whole new language.
I had decided that she was mine, that I refused to give up chasing her. And, if she was going to move out of her mother's house to come and stay with me, I would have to put in more effort. Loving her wasn't enough. I had to show it.
"Thank you," I said, handing the librarian her brochure back after filling in all of my personal information. "I'll be back."
